Yeongheung-myeon Clears Fallen Leaves From Forest-Side Roads to Prevent Autumn Slip Accidents

Ongjin-gun County's Yeongheung-myeon Township deploys about 20 residents and a road sweeper on the 21st to clear leaves and debris along the Yutgol-Hyanggyo section of Nae-ri

Yeongheung-myeon Township (Township Chief Jang Hyeok-jun) of Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) carried out an intensive leaf-collection effort on the 21st, focusing on roads that border forested areas, as autumn brings large amounts of falling leaves. The cleanup covered the section from Yutgol to Hyanggyo in the Nae-ri area of Yeongheung-myeon, and a road sweeper truck was also deployed.

The work had two goals: improving the roads’ appearance and keeping them safe. When fallen leaves and branches pile up along roadsides in autumn, they spoil the view and raise the risk of vehicles and pedestrians slipping. Yeongheung-myeon said it aimed to clear them in advance so that residents and tourists can use safe, clean roads.

The work was divided between people and equipment. On the day, the township and about 20 residents collected by hand the leaves and other debris that had built up along road edges and around drainage ditches. At the same time, the road sweeper focused on clearing leaves and pine needles scattered across the road surface. Using the equipment for wide road surfaces that are hard to cover by hand, and workers for the areas around drainage ditches that the equipment cannot reach, made the cleanup more efficient.

“Leaves that pile up in autumn not only spoil the look of the roads but can also cause slip accidents and block drainage ditches when it rains,” Yeongheung-myeon Township Chief Jang Hyeok-jun said. “We will continue environmental cleanups focused on forest-side roads with heavy leaf fall and on major travel routes, and do our best to make Yeongheung-myeon safe and clean.”

As the township chief noted, fallen leaves make road surfaces slippery when it rains and can wash into drainage ditches and block the flow of water. In autumn, when the harvest season and peak tourist season overlap, clearing forest-side roads in advance is more than simple cleaning. It is a preventive measure that protects both traffic safety and drainage.

The participation of about 20 residents in the cleanup is also notable, as it shows the local government and residents sharing responsibility for the roads they use every day. Yeongheung-myeon plans to keep cleaning roads, giving priority to forest-side roads with heavy leaf fall and sections with heavy traffic.
