Yeonsu-gu (연수구) Chief Lee Jae-ho Proposes Splitting Off Songdo-gu, Establishing New Police Station

Policy proposal delivered to Minister of the Interior and Safety

Posted Article No. 52399

On the 14th, Yeonsu-gu (연수구) District Chief Lee Jae-ho (이재호) attended a training session for local government heads held at the Government Complex Seoul (정부서울청사) and delivered a policy proposal to the Minister of the Interior and Safety calling for the creation of a separate Songdo-gu (송도구) district and the establishment of a new Songdo Police Station (송도경찰서). The proposal called for revising the criteria for district separation to reflect the characteristics of an international city, as well as government-level support for establishing the new police station.

Rapid Population Growth in Songdo Calls for Administrative Overhaul

Yeonsu-gu (연수구) maintains that administrative reorganization is necessary to proactively respond to the rising population and growing administrative demands of Songdo International City (송도국제도시).

In particular, citing precedents such as the establishment of Yeongjong-gu (영종구) and Geomdan-gu (검단구), the district requested that the government pursue institutional reforms and offer active cooperation so that a new Songdo-gu (송도구) can be created by comprehensively weighing local conditions and administrative efficiency.

Concerns Over Public Safety Gaps Reignite Push for New Police Station

The proposal to establish a Songdo Police Station (송도경찰서) has repeatedly failed to advance through review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (행정안전부) and the National Police Agency (경찰청) since 2019.

Songdo currently accounts for more than 53% of Yeonsu-gu’s (연수구) total population, yet it still has no independent police station of its own — instead, the entire district is covered by Yeonsu Police Station (연수경찰서), located in the older part of the district — fueling ongoing concerns about gaps in public safety coverage.

The district emphasized that, amid growing public anxiety over a recent string of violent crimes, establishing a Songdo Police Station (송도경찰서) should be pursued swiftly to ensure residents’ safety and enable proactive policing.

District Chief Lee Jae-ho: “We Will Work With the Government to Deliver Results”

Yeonsu-gu (연수구) District Chief Lee Jae-ho (이재호) said, “Right after taking office, I submitted my first policy proposal to the City of Incheon (인천시), and this time I have formally proposed to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (행정안전부) that Songdo-gu (송도구) be split off and a new Songdo Police Station (송도경찰서) be established.”

He added, “Building an administrative and public safety system that matches the pace of growth in Songdo International City (송도국제도시) is a task that can no longer be delayed, and I will continue to consult closely with the government to ensure we deliver tangible results.”
