On June 26, fifth-grade students from Sang-Incheon Elementary School (상인천초등학교) in Namdong-gu (남동구), Incheon, visited the Ganseok 1-dong (간석1동) Administrative and Welfare Center to deliver the ‘Our Village Proposal for Improving Jungang Park in Ganseok 1-dong’ to the residents’ self-governing council. As a partner institution of Ganseok 1-dong’s Our Village Education Autonomy Council (우리마을교육자치회), the students personally surveyed the neighborhood and, based on their observations, put forward five specific improvement plans to make Jungang Park a safer and more pleasant recreational space for residents.

The Jungang Park Improvement Proposal Written by Sang-Incheon Elementary Students Themselves
The proposal was written based on the students’ own observations of and reflections on their neighborhood, driven by their interest in the local community. It sets out five specific improvement plans filled with diverse ideas aimed at making Jungang Park — a shared recreational space for all residents — a more convenient and beautiful place.
The students expressed hope that their ideas would be reflected in the actual development of their community. The residents’ self-governing council plans to actively draw on the students’ fresh perspectives when carrying out its community agenda programs.

Residents’ Council and Ganseok 1-dong Commit to Expanding Children’s Participation in Local Governance
Residents’ Council Chair Sa Gwang-jin (사광진) said, ‘It is truly meaningful that the students took an interest in local community issues and proactively thought about and proposed solutions. We will work to foster a culture of resident self-governance where anyone in the community can participate in the neighborhood’s development.’
Ganseok 1-dong Administrator Kim So-young (김소영) said, ‘The children’s fresh perspective and innovative ideas are a precious asset in making our neighborhood a better place to live. Going forward, we will continue to develop a wide range of hands-on programs that encourage children to take an interest in and participate in the local community.’
