A few days after Zhuge Liang (諸葛亮) entered the gate of Xinye (新野) on his step down from the mountain (出山), Xiahou Dun (夏侯惇), a general under Cao Cao (曹操) at Xudu (許都), moved one hundred thousand soldiers toward Boyang Slope (博望坡).

Boyang Slope was a narrow mountain road north of Xinye. High mountains blocked both sides, and the narrow path between them stretched four li (四里).

At a seat in Liu Bei’s (劉備) retinue, Zhuge Liang laid out his plan. “Governor. The narrow grain of Boyang Slope shall become today’s grain of death for the enemy. Place General Guan Yu (關羽) in ambush upon the eastern mountain, and General Zhang Fei (張飛) upon the western. Let General Zhao Yun (趙雲) lure the enemy first at the southern entrance. Then let Liu Feng (劉封) draw the lured army into the middle of the narrow path. There, let the two mountain ambushes set the fire.”

Liu Bei nodded deeply. The four generals—Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, and Liu Feng—moved to their seats. Beneath the grain of the first battle, Zhuge Liang stood holding a feather-fan lightly.

Xiahou Dun’s hundred thousand reached the southern entrance of Boyang Slope. Leading a small unit, Zhao Yun appeared before him. Xiahou Dun gave a great shout and gave chase.

Zhao Yun drew back into the narrow path. Liu Feng took up the lure from him and pulled Xiahou Dun’s army deep into the middle. The hundred thousand stretched out along the narrow path.

In that instant, from the two mountaintops, the torches of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei rose at a single stroke. Upon the autumn’s dry grass and trees, fire spread at a single stroke. The narrow path of Boyang Slope became a sea of fire.

The hundred thousand were trapped in the middle of the flames. More than half the soldiers fell beneath the fire. Xiahou Dun barely escaped with a single cavalry back toward Xudu.

Liu Bei took Zhuge Liang’s hand with both his own. “Kongming. Today’s fire at Boyang Slope has become the first victory in the grain of Xinye.” Guan Yu and Zhang Fei bowed deeply before Zhuge Liang.

Inside the empty mountain behind the burn, after the last of Xiahou Dun’s cavalry had vanished south, a village boy of perhaps ten—who that morning had been gathering fallen branches upon a lower slope—sat with his back against a tree and watched the smoke rising. He did not understand the battle; he understood only that a great fire had been set, and that within the space of a single afternoon the sound of thousands of men crying out had risen and fallen. A boy of ten watching such a fire from a lower slope rarely forgets the pattern of smoke above a sea of fire. In the coming year, whenever a cooking fire in his mother’s kitchen sent up a certain grain of smoke, the boy would remember the afternoon; and by the time he was old enough to tell the memory to a son of his own, he would describe it as the afternoon on which “the mountain burned, and the young counselor with the feather-fan stood upon another mountain without lifting a weapon.”

At Xudu that night, Cao Cao received the report of Boyang Slope. He did not strike the table. He only laid a palm upon its edge and was quiet for a long breath. A lord who has sent a hundred thousand men against a small walled city and received back only a hundred cavalry rarely strikes a table; he only lays a palm upon the edge. Xun Yu and Cheng Yu stood a step behind and did not speak. At last Cao Cao lifted his palm and spoke low. “A dragon has come out of his mountain.” The two counselors nodded. The season had changed.

Back at the gate of Xinye, when the last of Liu Bei’s riders returned to the tower at dusk, the common people of the small walled city came out into the main street in small quiet groups. They did not cheer loudly. A people who have learned that their governor’s young counselor has scattered a hundred thousand northern soldiers with a single plan rarely cheer loudly; they come out into the street in small quiet groups and look toward the tower. Upon the tower, beside the old banner of the small walled city, a new banner had been raised. It bore only a plain grain of white cloth and a single character in black ink: shǒu (守, to guard). The common people read the character and did not ask for its meaning. In a small walled city after a first victory, the grain of a single character of “to guard” is already understood.

At his small residence that night, Zhuge Liang sat alone at a low table and laid the feather-fan upon it. He did not write any dispatch; he did not unroll any new scroll. A counselor whose first plan has scattered a hundred thousand rarely writes on the evening of that plan; he only lays the fan upon the table and listens to his own breath. That evening, the breath was steady. Tomorrow’s second plan would begin in the morning.

The hundred and fourth evening of Book 4 deepened quietly upon the ashes of the fire at Boyang Slope. The three characters Bakmang-hwa (博望火, the fire of Boyang Slope) were planted as a seed: the breath on which Xiahou Dun’s hundred thousand, the ambushes of four generals, the torches of two mountains, and the grain of a feather-fan lay at one seat. The step of Day 103’s Chulsan-il (出山一) had this evening reached upon the fire of Boyang Slope.

✒️ A Word from the Commentator — Dr. Yeon Samheum

There is an evening on which a person’s first plan is laid as a sea of fire upon a narrow mountain road. The grain of that first feather-fan is laid lightly in the middle of the flames. Upon your own evening today, is there perhaps a first plan laid lightly in a middle? Might you look once more, quietly, into the grain of that lightness?

📅 Tomorrow, Day 105: The Escort from Xinye (Session D1’s Final Episode)

“As Cao Cao’s great army descended toward Jingzhou (荊州), a morning was approaching on which Liu Bei would escort (護送) the common people of Xinye (新野) southward together with him.” — Sam H. Yeon, Ph.D.
