A month and a half later, on an afternoon in the late summer of Jian’an 13 (208 CE).

The reed forest north of Bowangpo (博望坡) was already turning yellow. The forest Guan Yu (關羽) had inspected a month earlier had proven thicker than expected. On returning, Guan Yu had written a single figure beside the first line of Kongming’s (孔明) slip. Three chi (尺). The reeds stood three chi thick — thick enough that a lit fire could rise three chi from the ground in a single motion.

The day and night routes of the Fancheng (樊城) scouts that Zhang Fei (張飛) had inspected were marked beside the second line as two small dots. The day’s dot to the north, the night’s dot to the east. Cao Ren’s (曹仁) picked force of ten thousand planned to march north by day and enter Bowangpo from the east by night.

The direction of the wind that Liu Bei (劉備) had measured, accurate to within two shichen (時辰), was marked beside the third line as a single-character arrow. The arrow slanted from north to south. One shichen after the late-summer sun began to tilt west, the wind would turn fully toward the south.

Kongming was not on the empty cushion at Xinye (新野) this afternoon either. But a new slip had arrived on the empty cushion this morning. Its writing ran one line.

When this afternoon’s wind turns fully south, let Guan Yu’s Green Dragon Blade come down first, then Zhang Fei’s spear, and let Your Lordship, at the eastern mouth of Bowang, wheel your horse wide.

Liu Bei had read that line at dawn. This afternoon, at the eastern mouth of Bowang, the line would be carried out.

The hour came when the late-summer sun tilted west. Inside the reed forest north of Bowangpo, the wind shifted — wide, sudden — from north to south. A wind slanted south flattened the reed leaves of the whole forest at a stroke.

At that stroke, Guan Yu’s torch fell upon the northern end of the forest. The fire flowed south. Three chi of reeds caught fire all at once. It spread faster and larger than expected. The three-chi height rose in a breath to two jang (길).

Cao Ren’s picked force was entering a strand of the eastern valley at that hour. At the eastern mouth, Liu Bei wheeled his horse wide. Seeing that movement, the vanguard of the picked force began to veer east. At that rhythm of veering, Zhang Fei’s spear came down from the southern end. A single descent of the Eight-Serpent Spear (八蛇矛) carved off a great piece from one side of the vanguard.

Wind and fire and spear and horse, each within one shichen, found its own seat.

Of Cao Ren’s ten thousand, five parts in ten were scattered into the fire, three into the spear, one into the horse, and the last into eastward flight. Fewer than a thousand returned alive to Fancheng.

On the western hill of Bowangpo this afternoon stood three men — Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei. The fourth shadow was not there. And yet, inside the three men, one line of the fourth shadow’s slip stood clearly with them. Their three shadows stretched upon the hill in three lines, and an unseen fourth shadow lay, quietly, across the center.

Liu Bei looked up at the western sky. The sun was already close to the horizon. Its direction was the same as the slip on the empty cushion in the west room at Xinye. This afternoon’s fire had carried out, down into Bowang in the south, the line on that empty cushion. The first result of the first plan from the owner of the empty cushion now showed upon the red sky of Bowangpo.

Zhang Fei drew a large breath beside him.

“Brother. This afternoon’s fire was five times larger than the first fire at Bowang last spring.”

Liu Bei nodded.

“Yide. Five times is the size of the fire. That a single line of a single slip bound three men into one rhythm — that is the five times of the five times. This afternoon we had one man fewer, and one slip more.”

Guan Yu bowed his head beside them. Behind the three, the last strand of Bowang’s fire was beginning to quiet at the southern end of the reeds. Within the dying fire, Kongming’s one line rose, together with the first light of this evening’s first star, up to the sky.

That rising was the true meaning of Bowang’s fire this afternoon. The fire was not on the reed ground; it was the fire of one sentence that had been waiting, on paper, for the right wind. The paper had not moved. The wind had. And the rhythm of a man on a distant cushion had tied the two — paper and wind — together.

✒️ A line from your editor — Dr. Yeon Sam-heum

There are seats on which one person does not come to the field, and the line from that person’s slip grows this afternoon’s fire five times larger. The force of that one line is, on certain afternoons, firmer than the force of a voice on the field. If one person beside you is not on the field today, yet one line of that person remains — might you make that line the seat of your own fire for this afternoon? Great plans rarely arrive in great voices; they arrive as quiet sentences, placed at the right corner, at the right hour, and then left alone. The quiet sentence trusts you to do the rest. That trust is half of what made it work.

📅 Tomorrow, Day 145: A Greeting Beneath the Banner

“Three days after the fire at Bowang had died out, Kongming arrived at the magistrate’s office at Xinye for the first time. Beneath the banner before the north gate, three men received one. The four hands met, for the first time, upon the five-chi paper of the map.” — Sam H. Yeon, Ph.D.
