Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, attended the kickoff briefing for the Gangwon AX Grand Transformation held at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul on August 13, throwing his weight behind the project. The initiative to transform the healthcare and wellness sector in the Gangwon region through artificial intelligence (AI) has entered full-scale planning.

The Ministry of Science and ICT (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bae Kyung-hoon) held a kickoff briefing at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul on August 13 to launch the Gangwon AX Grand Transformation in earnest. Deputy Prime Minister Bae attended the briefing that day and encouraged the participants, including local officials, so that the project could proceed smoothly.
The briefing brought together National Assembly figures such as Song Ki-heon, chair of the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, and Lee Kwang-jae, chair of the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts, along with local officials including the mayors of Wonju and Chuncheon, and experts from industry, academia and research. The participants shared a concrete vision and direction for the successful execution of the Gangwon AX Grand Transformation.
The project is part of the AX initiative being pursued in the Gangwon region among the regional AX projects under the 5-Hub, 3-Special-Zone framework. After planning is completed by the end of this year, a pilot program is planned for 2027 and a full-scale program for 2028, to be pursued in sequence. Gangwon Province is regarded as a region well equipped for an AX transformation in the healthcare and wellness field, as it hosts numerous tertiary general hospitals, public institutions such as the National Health Insurance Service and the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, and many medical and healthcare device manufacturers.
Deputy Prime Minister Bae stressed that AI is moving beyond mere technological innovation to establish itself as a new paradigm for growth, adding that future competition will hinge not on who develops superior AI, but on who applies AI effectively to create a new growth system. He went on to say that Gangwon is a region where an ecosystem of companies, medical institutions and research organizations related to the healthcare and wellness field is concentrated, and expressed hope that, building on these regional strengths, it would become a leading success story of healthcare and wellness AX transformation.
If the project combines with the medical infrastructure concentrated in the region, Gangwon residents are expected to experience firsthand the changes brought by AI technology applied to everyday medical services such as consultations and health management. It is significant in that it could also lead to the growth of the local medical and healthcare industry and to job creation.
