Koo Hyuk-chae, First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), met with related agencies on August 10 to mark the transition of the Program Directors (PDs) leading the 12 missions of the K-Moonshot Program into national special-assignment researchers and the opening of the promotion support office, intensively reviewing ways to generate outcomes that the public can tangibly experience.

Koo Hyuk-chae, First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT (led by Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT), met on August 10 with the Program Directors (PDs) for each of the 12 missions and officials from related agencies at the K-Moonshot Program promotion support office, which opened in Jiphyeon-dong, Sejong Special Self-Governing City. He commended their efforts to date and discussed the future direction of each mission.

The gathering was arranged to mark the opening of the promotion support office, following the PDs leading the 12 missions transitioning into national special-assignment researchers on August 1 and being granted broad authority. The discussion, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, was attended by the PDs of the 12 missions along with government-funded research institutes, the National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST), the National Research Foundation of Korea, and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP).

The K-Moonshot Program is a government research and development (R&D) project that combines science and technology with artificial intelligence (AI) innovation to tackle difficult technical challenges. The 12 missions selected are: new drugs, brain-computer interfaces (BCI), nuclear fusion, solar cells, small modular reactor (SMR) ships, AI scientists, physical AI, humanoids, semiconductors, quantum, rare earths, and space data centers. The name embodies the ‘moonshot’ spirit of taking on national challenges while accepting the risk of failure.

Since the promotion strategy was announced by the National AI Strategy Committee on February 25, the program has steadily built its foundation at a brisk pace, including the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MSIT and 160 partner companies on March 11, the selection of PDs for each mission and the launch of the K-Moonshot promotion team on May 27, and the transition of the PDs into national special-assignment researchers on August 1.

The discussion that day covered such key topics as designing mission-by-mission roadmaps that the public can tangibly feel, ways to generate and spread outcomes through collaboration with diverse stakeholders including industry and related ministries, and measures to strengthen the use of AI in the research process. This reflects the aim of ensuring that large-scale R&D projects do not stop at laboratory results but extend to industrial fields and everyday life, demonstrating the government’s determination to make step-by-step performance goals concrete.

First Vice Minister Koo Hyuk-chae said, ‘I express my deep gratitude for the efforts of the PDs and related agencies who have laid the foundations of the 12 missions,’ adding, ‘Now that they have been newly appointed as national special-assignment researchers, I hope the PDs will boldly broaden their points of contact with industry, academia, and research institutes on the basis of a moonshot spirit that does not fear failure, and actively work to solve national challenges.’
