At Xudu, Cao Cao received a new plan from Xun Yu: to make Yuan Shu of Shouchun and Liu Bei of Xuzhou strike each other. Yuan Shu struck Liu Bei; and Liu Bei came to hang a single grain of his life upon the tip of Lü Bu’s bow, beneath the hem of the camp-gate (轅門).

In the spring that Yuan Shu had held Sun Ce’s jade seal inside his bosom, his own air (氣) rose sharply. Upon the table of Shouchun, he was inflating his own name with the name of emperor. The resolve to strike Liu Bei rode upon the tip of that air. A hundred thousand soldiers under Ji Ling (紀靈) moved toward Xuzhou.

Liu Bei swallowed a long breath upon the tower of Xiaopei (小沛). Zhang Fei and Guan Yu stood at his side. Liu Bei spoke low. “Let us send a man to Lü Bu. Lü Bu and we lie beneath the same roof of Xuzhou. Seeing our peril, Lü Bu will move.” Sun Qian (孫乾) rode out and stood before Lü Bu.

Inside Lü Bu’s tent, Chen Gong (陳宮) brought out a low word. “My Lord. If Liu Bei falls, Yuan Shu grows one body larger. If Yuan Shu grows, our turn comes next. It is to our own gain to keep Liu Bei alive. Yet to block Ji Ling’s army with a blade will carry a heavy weight for later days. Stand a single halberd before the camp-gate, and shoot its tip; with one arrow, let two battles be lulled together.”

Lü Bu nodded deeply. “Set a small branch of the painted halberd (畵戟) at one hundred and fifty paces.” A man went out and fixed a single Sky-Piercing Halberd in the ground before the camp-gate.

That day, two armies were summoned to the seat before the camp-gate. On one side sat Ji Ling; on the other, Liu Bei. Lü Bu set out wine and offered it to both men. “I have one request. If my arrow strikes the small branch of that halberd set one hundred and fifty paces away, each of you will pull back your army and return. If it misses, let each of you follow your own will into battle.”

Neither Ji Ling nor Liu Bei could easily withdraw from such a seat. The two nodded. Lü Bu lifted his bow. He drew the string. A quiet swallowed a fistful of the air before the camp-gate.

A single arrow crossed the air. The tip of the small branch, one hundred and fifty paces away, fell at a single stroke. Both camps broke into a simultaneous gasp. Lü Bu laughed loudly. “Heaven itself has lulled today’s battle. Each side, keep the promise together.” Ji Ling bowed his head deeply and turned the hundred thousand back toward Shouchun. Liu Bei, too, bowed and withdrew inside the gate of Xiaopei.

That evening, Liu Bei spoke low to Sun Qian. “Lü Bu has, today, saved our lives. The single bow of the camp-gate lulled two battles together with one arrow. How should this debt of today be repaid?” Sun Qian answered low. “My Lord. This debt will not be repaid at a single stroke. It is a debt that must be returned grain by grain over a long span of days.”

Meanwhile, inside the tent at Xudu, Cao Cao laid a low sigh before Xun Yu. “Wenruo. Today’s single bow before the camp-gate has, at one stroke, lulled the two tigers of Yuan Shu and Liu Bei together. This move has stood against our Two Tigers Competing for Food.” Xun Yu offered a low smile. “My Lord. Lü Bu is the master of a bow that can lull two battles with one arrow. A plan to move, later, that same bow into another man’s hand still remains to us.”

Outside the tent, Guo Jia was seated upon a low stool with a cup of cooling tea in his hand. He had listened to the exchange without comment. A counselor who has heard his colleague answer his lord has no need to add a second voice in the same hour. He set the cup down and took a short breath. The debt that Liu Bei had just taken on at Xiaopei, the plan that Xun Yu had just named at Xudu, and the arrow that Lü Bu had just loosed at the camp-gate lay together inside Guo Jia’s single breath. He did not write any of them down. Some counselors keep the ledger of a season inside the chest and only unfold it on the evening it must be read.

At Shouchun, the news of the single arrow arrived at Yuan Shu’s table three mornings later. Yuan Shu read the report and pressed his palm down hard upon the edge of the jade seal. The dream of emperorship that had been reflected upon that surface in the winter had, by this autumn, grown a first layer of frost. The frost did not cool the dream; it only made the dream feel colder on the lip than on the tongue. Yuan Shu called for paper and began to draft a proclamation of a name larger than any name he had so far been permitted to call himself. The paper took the ink without complaint.

The fifty-eighth evening of Book 2 deepened quietly beneath the single bow before the camp-gate. The three characters Wonmungeuk (轅門戟, the halberd at the camp-gate) were planted as a seed: the breath on which the march of a hundred thousand, the single arrow of one bow, and the simultaneous gasp of two camps lay at one seat. The first move of Day 54’s Ihogye (二虎計) had, this evening, been lulled for a time beneath a single arrow.

✒️ A Word from the Commentator — Dr. Yeon Samheum

There is an evening on which a single bow, with one arrow, lulls two battles together. Once the tip of that arrow strikes the tip of a small branch, the steps of two camps turn quietly back. Upon your own evening today, is there perhaps a seat on which a single arrow has lulled two battles together? Might you look, quietly, into the weave of that laying?

📅 Tomorrow, Day 59: The Usurper’s Dream

“At Shouchun, Yuan Shu began to place the character Emperor (皇帝) before his own name. Upon the surface of the jade seal, the dream of usurpation (僭稱) was spreading coldly.” — Sam H. Yeon, Ph.D.
