Participants to take part in English classes, a STEAM camp, university tours and cultural experiences
Guro-gu (Mayor Jang In-hong) announced that 28 first-year middle school students from schools in the district departed for Canada on July 20 to take part in the “2026 Global Education Program for Middle School Students.”
The Global Education Program for Middle School Students is designed to provide first-year middle school students, who are subject to the free-semester system, with opportunities for overseas education and cultural experiences, thereby broadening the range of their aptitudes and strengthening their global competencies. The district has operated the program continuously since launching it on a pilot basis in 2020.

For three weeks until August 8, the participating students will stay in the dormitories of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, taking part in a variety of global education programs including local English classes, a STEAM camp, tours of Canada’s prestigious universities and cultural experiences.
The district selected the 28 first-year middle school students based on recommendations from the principals of schools in the district, and held a preliminary briefing session for the participating students’ parents on June 20.

Subsequently, on July 11, an English level test, a launching ceremony and an orientation session were held for the participating students and their parents at the Guro-gu Office auditorium. The launching ceremony featured the reading of a pledge by a student representative, words of encouragement from the mayor and a group photo session.
In addition, this year’s program is being carried out with the inclusion of a 200 million won donation from the Hyunsong Education and Culture Foundation, giving it significance as an example of the public and private sectors working together to expand global education opportunities for local youth.
Guro-gu Mayor Jang In-hong said, “I hope the Global Education Program will serve as a valuable opportunity for students to experience a wider world and to discover their dreams and aptitudes,” adding, “We will continue to operate a variety of programs that support the growth of young people who will lead the future.”
