The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZA) announced that the Bio-Process Manpower Training Center, which opened in Songdo last year, began delivering training programs in March this year, further strengthening the foundation for cultivating specialized bio talent. With a workforce-training function now added to its world-class production capacity, the competitiveness of the Songdo bio cluster is expected to grow.

IFEZA announced that the Bio-Process Manpower Training Center, which opened in Songdo on November 25 last year, launched full-scale training operations beginning in March this year.
Over five years starting in 2021, IFEZA built up hands-on training infrastructure with a total floor area of about 6,600 square meters (four stories above ground) in phases, creating a base where theoretical and practical education at the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) level can take place. This is significant in that training goes beyond theory and can be conducted in an environment identical to an actual production site.
The programs are led by Yonsei University’s K-NIBRT project group and are run as tailored courses for both current workers and job seekers. The focus is on developing practically oriented talent who can respond quickly to on-site demand, and applications for training can be made on the project group’s website.
As of August, the K-NIBRT project group has trained a total of 2,528 bio workers this year. Of these, 555 took part in courses that used the hands-on facilities of the Bio-Process Manpower Training Center. This draws attention as a practical stepping stone toward employment and on-the-job adaptation for local young people and current workers.
With the center now in operation, the Songdo bio cluster has gained a specialized workforce-training function on top of its world-class production capacity. Songdo is already home to global companies such as Samsung Biologics and Celltrion, along with a concentration of training infrastructure including the Cytiva Fast Trak Center and the Thermo Fisher Bioprocess Design Center.
Workforce development by individual companies is also active. Celltrion nurtures local talent through its hands-on ‘Cell-On’ program, while Samsung Biologics and Samsung Bioepis have partnered with Yonsei University’s College of Life Science and Biotechnology to operate scholarship schemes and more. Cytiva Korea’s Fast Trak Center, at 2,200 square meters, is equipped with world-class equipment and training programs to cultivate the specialists the industry needs for growth.
IFEZA plans to continue identifying corporate training needs and expanding cooperation between educational institutions and resident companies so that the center can establish itself as a genuine hub for bio talent development, working to invigorate education linked to the industrial field.
Incheon Mayor Park Chan-dae said, ‘Our city has both world-class biopharmaceutical production capacity and the foundation to cultivate specialized talent,’ adding, ‘We will build a virtuous cycle in which we develop the talent that companies need on-site, and these people in turn enhance the competitiveness of the bio industry.’
