South Korea’s 3-0 victory over Ecuador gave football fans a refreshing and convincing win. The match marked the national team’s first game under interim head coach Robert Moreno. After finishing the first half scoreless, South Korea increased the tempo of its attack after the break and eventually decided the contest with three consecutive goals.
Oh Hyeon-gyu was the player who finally broke the deadlock. In the 54th minute, Oh found the back of the net to give South Korea a 1-0 lead. The long-awaited opening goal immediately brought greater energy to the team’s attack.
Just four minutes later, captain Son Heung-min stepped up to double the advantage. Son scored from a right-footed free kick in the 58th minute, extending South Korea’s lead to 2-0 and putting the team firmly in control of the match.
The goal also carried special significance for Son. It was his 57th goal for South Korea at the senior international level, moving him within one goal of the record of 58 goals for the South Korean men’s national team.
With a two-goal advantage, South Korea used substitutions to test different combinations on the field. Ecuador pushed forward in search of a goal, but South Korea held firm. The defensive line and goalkeeper kept Ecuador off the scoresheet and protected the 2-0 lead.
Lee Dong-gyeong provided the final blow. He entered the match in place of Son in the 85th minute and made an immediate impact. Just a minute later, Lee received a pass from Kim Bong-soo and fired a left-footed shot into the net to make it 3-0.
South Korea ultimately completed the match without conceding a goal. Oh Hyeon-gyu opened the scoring, Son Heung-min strengthened the team’s control, and Lee Dong-gyeong completed the victory. All three goals came in the second half.
South Korea’s 3-0 victory over Ecuador also carried significance because it was the opening match of the Robert Moreno era. The attacking players combined for three goals under the new coaching setup, while the team also recorded a clean sheet.
However, it would be premature to conclude that the national team’s transformation is complete based on a single match. Whether the new tactical approach and player combinations continue to produce results in upcoming fixtures will be an important point to watch.
South Korea is scheduled to face Uruguay at Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. on September 28. Attention will now turn to whether the national team can carry the attacking momentum from the Ecuador match into its next international friendly.
Three second-half goals transformed the mood of the match and delivered the convincing performance supporters had been waiting for. South Korea’s 3-0 victory over Ecuador was significant not only for the result but also as an encouraging opening performance for a national team beginning a new chapter.
