As Incheon’s Yeongjong-gu District (Mayor Son Hwa-jung) officially launched on July 1 this year, the Yeongjong-gu District workplace sports fencing team claimed the team title in its first appearance on the national stage under its new name. In its first competition after the former Jung-gu District fencing team changed its banner to the Yeongjong-gu District fencing team through the administrative restructuring, the squad won straight away, once again impressing the nation with the strength of a “fencing powerhouse.”

Announcing the achievement on the 6th, Yeongjong-gu District said its fencing team won a total of four medals at the 64th National Fencing Championships by Division, recently held in the Jecheon area of North Chungcheong Province, taking gold in the women’s team sabre, silver and bronze in the individual event, and bronze in the women’s team foil. The observation is that the district’s flagship sports team, in its first test right after launch, produced multi-title-caliber results including a gold medal, and that this carries great significance in tandem with the external standing of the newly established Yeongjong-gu District.
The stars of the victory were Kim Do-hui, Ji Yeong-gyeong, Yang Ye-sol and Jeon Eun-hye, who competed in the women’s team sabre. They defeated Ansan City Hall 45-37 in the final to stand atop the podium. This gold medal was all the more valuable because it erased, in just one year, the disappointment of finishing runner-up at the 63rd championships held last year.
The momentum revived in the team event carried straight into the individual competition. Yang Ye-sol and Jeon Eun-hye, who entered the women’s individual sabre, both advanced to the semifinals and faced each other as teammates in the last four; Yang Ye-sol, who won that bout, reached the final and finished runner-up. Jeon Eun-hye, who narrowly bowed out in the semifinals, also placed third, producing two medalists at once in a single event.
The results in the foil discipline were no less impressive. The women’s foil team, made up of Kim Hyun-jin, Mun Se-hui, Hong Se-na and Lee Chae-hui, fell just short of the final after a close contest with Seoul City Hall, losing 29-34, but took bronze as the third-place team.
Yeongjong-gu District Mayor Son Hwa-jung said, “I am very proud of the athletes who achieved excellent results, including a valuable gold medal, at the first national competition in which they newly competed as the Yeongjong-gu District fencing team after the administrative restructuring,” adding, “As this achievement has become an occasion to raise Yeongjong-gu District’s standing, we will support and cheer them on so they can continue this good momentum going forward.”
After a brief rest, the Yeongjong-gu District fencing team will immediately take on its next challenge. It plans to begin training aimed at the 66th Presidential Cup National Fencing Championships and the 31st Kim Chang-hwan Cup National Fencing Championships, both to be held in August, and attention is turning to whether the team can carry its first-year upward trend through the second half of the year.
