Following the solo exhibition, Choi will participate in the Venice Biennale Satellite Group Exhibition from July 11 to July 15, 2026, further introducing Korean contemporary art to an international audience.
The Final Chapter of the Crimson Lake Red Limited Collection
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the Crimson Lake Red Limited Collection Series, representing the final works created with Holbein’s discontinued Crimson Lake Red pigment.
For years, the distinctive crimson color has been a defining element of Yena Choi’s artistic identity. Rather than replacing the discontinued pigment with a similar alternative, the artist chose to preserve its originality by creating a limited collection using the remaining paint. As a result, every work in this series is both artistically unique and historically significant, preserving a material that can no longer be reproduced.

The exhibition will also feature paintings from Choi’s personal collection, allowing visitors to trace the development of her artistic language from early works to her latest postmodern compositions.
Freud’s Death Drive Reimagined Through Postmodern Art
At the heart of Yena Choi’s work lies an exploration of Sigmund Freud’s concept of the death drive (Thanatos).
Rather than interpreting death as a final destination, Choi presents it as part of an ongoing cycle of destruction, transformation, and rebirth. Throughout the exhibition, crimson symbolizes blood, but also the beginning of life, human instinct, memory, and regeneration.
Faces dissolve into abstract forms, while intense layers of color create psychological landscapes that invite viewers to contemplate the relationship between existence and unconscious desire. Her paintings merge modern artistic techniques with postmodern philosophy, where contradiction, fragmentation, and renewal coexist within a single visual narrative.
This philosophical approach distinguishes Choi’s work within contemporary Korean art, transforming psychological theory into an immersive visual experience.
A Landmark International Exhibition in Venice
The Yena Choi Venice Biennale Satellite Solo Exhibition represents an important milestone in the artist’s international career. Held during one of the world’s most recognized contemporary art events, the exhibition highlights the growing presence of Korean artists on the global stage.
Sponsored by Gallery Michelle, the project combines a solo exhibition, a group exhibition, and the exclusive presentation of the Crimson Lake Red Limited Collection, making it one of Choi’s most ambitious international exhibitions to date.
Collectors and art professionals are expected to take particular interest in the limited-edition works, as they are the final paintings produced using the discontinued Holbein pigment. Their rarity enhances not only their artistic value but also their historical significance within contemporary painting.
By combining philosophical inquiry, psychological symbolism, and innovative visual language, Yena Choi continues to expand the boundaries of postmodern art while introducing Korean contemporary aesthetics to a global audience.
