Ministers in charge of artificial intelligence (AI) and science and technology from Korea and five Central Asian countries came together for the first time to discuss ways to cooperate in the future. The Ministry of Science and ICT (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon) held the Korea-Central Asia Future AI and Science-Technology Partnership Ministerial Meeting at the Seoul Central Post Office on September 14.

The ministerial meeting was arranged on the occasion of the 1st Korea-Central Asia Summit, which is being held in Seoul for the first time this month. The meeting ran from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day and was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon.
Korea has maintained friendly cooperative relations with the five Central Asian countries — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan — since establishing diplomatic ties in 1992. However, this was the first time that ministerial-level officials from both sides in the fields of AI and science and technology had gathered together, giving the meeting significance as a new starting point for cooperation.
Attendees included the heads of delegation from each country — Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development along with its Minister of Science and Higher Education, Kyrgyzstan’s Minister of Science, Higher Education and Innovation, Tajikistan’s head of the Innovation and Digital Technologies Agency, Turkmenistan’s Minister of Communications, and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Digital Technologies — as well as Kim Sang-hyup, Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
At the meeting, the Ministry of Science and ICT joined the five countries’ heads of delegation in welcoming the summit and discussed future cooperation agendas that would be mutually beneficial to both regions.
The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), which took part in the meeting, introduced its plan to expand climate technology demonstration projects through the Climate Technology Acceleration Fund (CTAF). Going forward, the GGGI intends to work with the five Central Asian countries to broaden the local demonstration and commercialization of climate technologies utilizing future innovative technologies, and to continue supporting the discovery of concrete projects and strategic planning to that end.
Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said, ‘At this ministerial meeting, we formed a consensus with the AI and science-technology ministers of the five Central Asian countries on mutually beneficial future cooperation,’ adding, ‘Along with the successful hosting of the upcoming 1st Korea-Central Asia Summit, I hope that cooperation in the AI and science-technology fields, combining the strengths of both regions, will expand.’
The meeting is aligned with the national policy task of systemic innovation to realize Korea’s goal of becoming one of the world’s top five science and technology powers. Should AI and science-technology cooperation with Central Asia — a region rich in resources and growth potential — take concrete shape, it is expected to widen the overseas demonstration stage for domestic technologies and increase opportunities for joint projects in the climate and digital sectors.
