Incheon Philharmonic to Hold ‘Documentary Concert’ Marking Its 60th Anniversary

Isang Yun's 'Réak' to be performed at Art Center Incheon on Oct. 8, with a live recording capturing six decades of history

Posted Article No. 58430

The Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra (Artistic Director Choi Soo-yeol) will hold a specially curated concert, «REC:PLAY (The Documentary Concert)», at 8 p.m. on October 8 in the Concert Hall of Art Center Incheon to mark its 60th anniversary. Rather than being a one-off performance, the event is designed to preserve the moment as a live recording, shining a light on the value of classical music as an enduring ‘record’.

Founded in 1966, the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra has stood at the center of the region’s arts scene for more than half a century. «The Documentary Concert» was conceived to look back on the history and musical journey the orchestra has traveled, and to preserve the moment of performance permanently as a record. Its significance lies in an attempt that goes beyond a mere stage, expanding a ‘performance’ into a ‘record’.

At the heart of the program stands Isang Yun’s «Réak». «Réak» premiered at the Donaueschingen Festival for contemporary music in Germany in 1966, the very year the Incheon Philharmonic was founded, and is one of Yun’s signature works, rendering the aesthetics of traditional Korean music in the language of Western contemporary music. This piece, in which the traditional melodies of the East and the modern techniques of the West achieve harmony, will be performed under the baton of Artistic Director Choi Soo-yeol, evoking the meaning of the artistic path the orchestra has traveled.

An explanatory segment has also been prepared so that audiences can gain a deeper understanding of the works. Music journalist Kim Sung-hyun will serve as concert guide, sharing the history of the Incheon Philharmonic and the stories behind the program. In addition, Choi Jin, a world-renowned recording producer and tonmeister, will take part to offer expert commentary on the processes of album recording and musical documentation. Beyond simply listening to the performance, the concert will offer audiences the distinctive experience of examining how music is recorded.

An official of the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra said, ‘This «Documentary Concert» will not only preserve the moment of performance as a record, but also serve as an occasion to fully retrace the performing capabilities and musical history that the Incheon Philharmonic has accumulated over the past 60 years,’ adding, ‘We hope that, with the expert commentary woven in, it will be a meaningful time in which audiences come to understand the works even more deeply.’

Admission is 10,000 won for all seats, and the concert is open to those in elementary school and above. Tickets can be reserved through the Incheon Culture and Arts Center website, Art Center Incheon, NTicket, and NOL Ticket.
