The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) are recruiting researchers from industry, academia and research institutes to make use of the ultra-high-performance computing resources of National Supercomputer No. 6, which is set for official operation this December. Applications will be accepted from September 28 to October 16 on the website of the National Supercomputing Center.

The Ministry of Science and ICT (led by Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT) and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI, President Lee Sik) announced that, starting September 9, they will conduct a public call for users targeting researchers who will utilize the computing resources of National Supercomputer No. 6, as part of the 2026 National Supercomputer No. 6 Innovation Support Program.

The call comes as the growing role of AI is rapidly transforming the way science is conducted, heightening the need for the computing infrastructure to support it. Until now, domestic researchers have had to individually purchase expensive GPUs or rely on private cloud services, which raised concerns over both cost burdens and research security. Supercomputer No. 6 is positioned as a core national infrastructure to fill this gap, and it will be used across a wide range of fields including large-scale computational science, data simulation and AI-based research.

Unit No. 6 is equipped with 8,496 of NVIDIA’s latest GPUs, including the GH200, along with 9,936 CPUs. Its theoretical computing performance is 614 petaflops, its storage capacity is 205 petabytes, and its network performance exceeds 400Gbps. Compared with Unit No. 5, computing performance is 24 times higher, storage capacity 10 times larger and network performance 4 times greater. Based on the recently released global Top500 supercomputer rankings, it is estimated that it will be listed among the world’s top 10. The GH200 is an integrated CPU-GPU accelerator chip that combines the existing Hopper (H100) architecture with an ARM-based central processing unit called Grace to enhance data-processing efficiency.

After signing a construction contract with its manufacturer, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), in May last year, Unit No. 6 completed system installation and basic inspection this August and is currently undergoing performance and stability testing. The target date for the official launch of services is sometime in December.

The program is divided into three tracks according to the target and purpose of support: National Strategy, R&D Innovation and Industrial Innovation. The National Strategy program allocates around 30 percent of total resources to projects recognized as urgent and important, such as those aimed at securing national strategic technologies, with priority given to core initiatives including K-Moonshot and the 7 SEED projects. The R&D Innovation program supports general researchers from industry, academia and institutes with around 55 percent of total resources. It backs Grand Research (equivalent to 50 nodes), which requires ultra-large simulations, as well as general-scale Creative Research (equivalent to 2 to 49 nodes). It has also newly established Exploratory Research (equivalent to 1 node), which provides resources after only a minimal review in order to support the early-stage validation of ideas. A single node of Supercomputer No. 6 consists of four GH200 units.

The newly introduced Industrial Innovation program targets researchers in industry, offering KISTI’s consulting and technical support alongside computing resources. It allocates around 15 percent of total resources and is expected to lower the barrier to AI-based R&D for small and medium-sized and venture companies that have the R&D capabilities but have struggled to secure computing infrastructure.

Applications for official service users will be accepted from September 28 to 6 p.m. on October 16 via the National Supercomputing Center website (www.ksc.re.kr). Selected users, chosen through a written review and an evaluation committee assessment, will be allocated resources sometime in December. Researchers wishing to use the pilot service ahead of the official launch may apply on the same website from September 23 to October 8, with the pilot service provided to selected applicants from late October to mid-November.

KISTI President Lee Sik said, ‘As the National Supercomputing Center, KISTI is drawing on its operational expertise to complete full preparations for providing stable services on Supercomputer No. 6,’ adding, ‘We will support the researchers and companies selected through this call so that they can conduct their research more actively using supercomputing resources.’ Kim Sung-soo, Director-General for R&D Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, ‘Supercomputer No. 6 is core infrastructure that will drive a major leap in the productivity of science and technology research in the AI era,’ and expressed hope that ‘it will produce tangible achievements contributing to the securing of national strategic technologies, including K-Moonshot and the 7 SEED projects, as well as to research innovation across industry, academia and institutes.’
