The Mansu 5-dong (만수5동) Community Service Center (director Kim Jin-hee / 김진희) in Namdong-gu (남동구), Incheon, joined the Mansu 5-dong Integrated Care Team (통합돌봄단) — composed of the Saemaul Women’s Association (새마을부녀회) and the Residents’ Autonomous Association (통장자율회) — on the 25th to hold the ‘Love Side Dish Sharing’ event for low-income, vulnerable elderly residents in the neighborhood. The event was organized to help seniors restore their appetite and replenish nutrition ahead of the peak summer heat.

Three Carefully Prepared Dishes: Braised Mackerel with Radish Leaves, Cucumber Pickle Salad, and Stir-Fried Kimchi
For the event, three side dishes were prepared and delivered directly to elderly residents’ homes: braised mackerel with dried radish leaves, known for its immune-boosting properties; cucumber pickle salad to stimulate appetite; and stir-fried kimchi to aid digestion.
One elderly recipient expressed gratitude, saying, “As the weather gets hotter, I’ve been feeling weak and losing my appetite — having these delicious, nutritious dishes delivered right to my door, along with the company of the volunteers, is a great comfort.”
Saemaul Women’s Association and Residents’ Autonomous Association Look After Elderly Health This Summer
Han Man-sun (한만순), president of the Saemaul Women’s Association, said, “We prepared these side dishes so that the isolated elderly people in our community can stay healthy through the summer before the real heat sets in. We will continue striving to prepare delicious side dishes that promote the health of our seniors.”
Members of the Saemaul Women’s Association (president Han Man-sun) and the Residents’ Autonomous Association (president Park Yong-nyeo / 박용녀) participated in the event, handling everything from cooking the side dishes to delivering them.
A Sustained Biweekly Year-Round Program — Aimed at Preventing Lonely Deaths and Addressing Nutritional Imbalance
The Mansu 5-dong Love Side Dish Support Program is a year-round initiative funded by the Community Chest of Korea (사회복지공동모금회), running on a biweekly basis. It serves 40 low-income households, including elderly people living alone and people with disabilities who have difficulty preparing their own meals.
The Community Service Center aims to address nutritional imbalances among vulnerable residents and help prevent lonely deaths through these regular home delivery visits.
