Posted Article No. 52326

The Culture-Leading Industrial Complex development project at the Namdong National Industrial Complex (남동국가산업단지), jointly submitted by Namdong-gu (남동구) and Incheon Metropolitan City, has been selected in a government open competition. Lee Byung-rae (이병래), head of Namdong-gu, announced the selection on the 10th and confirmed on the 14th that the project, worth a total of 58.7 billion won, will be pursued in earnest over four years starting in 2026.

What Does the Namdong Complex Culture-Leading Project Involve?

The project consists of five strategic goals, ten key initiatives, and 43 detailed sub-projects for the Namdong National Industrial Complex, including remodeling aging factories, expanding cultural, creative, and leisure facilities using idle land and green spaces, upgrading the industrial startup ecosystem, and improving pedestrian traffic environments.

Through this, Namdong-gu (남동구) and Incheon Metropolitan City aim to restructure the aging, production-focused industrial complex into a manufacturing-culture fusion space that attracts young people, achieving both a recovery in the complex’s competitiveness and greater regional vitality.

Multipurpose Cultural Center, the Key Landmark, to Be Directly Operated by Namdong-gu

The project’s key landmark is a four-story multipurpose cultural center to be built on part of the site within Namdong Neighborhood Park (남동근린공원). Namdong-gu (남동구) will directly oversee its construction and will also be responsible for its future operation.

Each floor will feature distinctive cultural amenity spaces for workers and citizens, with the aim of providing Namdong industrial complex workers with a healing space that goes beyond a mere workplace, offering a balance between work and life.

Head of Namdong-gu Lee Byung-rae (이병래): “We Will Achieve a Great Transformation into an Industrial City”

Lee Byung-rae (이병래), head of Namdong-gu, said, “Being selected for the Culture-Leading Industrial Complex project marks the starting point for Namdong-gu (남동구) to leap beyond being a manufacturing-centered city into a new kind of industrial city where work and culture coexist.”

He added, “We will create a Namdong-style model of great transformation that achieves both stronger industrial competitiveness and an improved quality of life, and grow it into a leading example not only for Incheon but for industrial cities across the country.”
