The Songam Art Museum of Incheon Metropolitan City announced that it will run ‘Haha Hoho Art Museum,’ a culture-companion education program for groups and organizations serving seniors and people with disabilities, over a total of five sessions held every Wednesday from the 28th through November 25.

The program was planned to provide arts and culture education to the culturally underserved and to broaden active opportunities for them to enjoy the arts. In a reality where the museum as a space still functions as a psychological and physical threshold for some, the program is distinctive in helping seniors and people with disabilities encounter art up close through familiar means.

Under the subtitle ‘Everything Is a Flower,’ ‘Haha Hoho Art Museum’ is composed of theory and appreciation activities for understanding the symbolism and meaning of Korea’s native flowers as found in songs and paintings, along with hands-on activities in which participants create their own works. Participants will identify Korean flowers that appear in the lyrics of familiar trot songs and children’s songs, and learn about the beauty and symbolism of native flowers as expressed in old paintings. They will then spend time making flower-and-bird painting handbags and folk-painting mood lamps based on what they have learned.

The classes take place on Wednesday afternoons. Details such as the education schedule and how to apply can be found on the Songam Art Museum website, and applications are accepted by telephone (☎ 032-440-6786) on a first-come, first-served basis.

Choi Jun-su, director of the Songam Art Museum, said, ‘This program was prepared so that seniors and people with disabilities who have found it difficult to visit the museum can feel art is approachable through familiar songs and paintings,’ adding, ‘We will continue to offer culture-companion programs so that culturally underserved communities can enjoy and engage with arts and culture in their daily lives.’
