National Science Museum Opens Public Call for Booth Operators for ‘2026 Maker PLAY’

Applications accepted from July 27 to August 9… 45 booths to be selected with tailored workshop support

Posted Article No. 53558

The Gwacheon National Science Museum (Director Lee Eun-young) will hold a public call from July 27 to August 9, open to all citizens, for booth operators to run the hands-on and exhibition booths at the ‘2026 Maker (Creator) PLAY’ event, to be held on October 31 in the Kkumi Plaza area. The aim is to reinvent the event as a ‘creative playground of communication and sharing’ where visitors take part in creation firsthand, moving away from the previous format centered on outcomes and awards.

The National Science Museum announced that it will host ‘2026 Maker PLAY’ on October 31 in the Kkumi Plaza area of the National Science Museum, and that ahead of the event it will recruit booth operators from July 27 to August 9.

The call is open to anyone interested in maker culture — including professional creators, university maker clubs, private companies, maker clubs at middle and high schools such as general high schools, Meister high schools and arts high schools, as well as individual creators — who may take part either individually or as a team. Submitted proposals will undergo expert review, and a total of 45 final operating booths will be selected and announced on August 13.

This call goes beyond simply providing space. From August, immediately after selection and up until the booths open, one or two tailored workshops will be held, along with expert mentoring to help design visitor-centered hands-on content. The workshops are also intended to serve as a venue for building a maker network that encourages idea-sharing and collaboration among participating creators. Because even beginners can raise the quality of their work with advice from experts, the program is meaningful in lowering the barrier to entry for participants with little creative experience.

On the day of the event, after visitors experience each booth’s content and ideas firsthand, a popular-maker selection event titled ‘I’m the Best’ will be held, in which the team that wins the greatest empathy is chosen through real-time on-site voting. Departing from formalized evaluations and award ceremonies, it is an interactive, communication-based format in which visitors take part as both the stars of the festival and its judges. Participants who diligently operate their booths will be issued an official booth-operation certificate under the name of the Director of the National Science Museum.

Director Lee Eun-young said, ‘This Maker (Creator) PLAY event will become an open cultural venue where citizens can bring to life on-site the creative ideas they usually only imagine, and communicate with one another,’ adding, ‘Through mentoring support via the pre-event workshops and the building of a close network among makers, we aim to create a dynamic event where participants and visitors alike can enjoy themselves and grow together, so we ask for the keen interest and participation of all makers with creative passion.’

Detailed information, including how to apply and the required document forms, can be found in the notices section of the National Science Museum website (www.science.go.kr).
