Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) and the Incheon branch of the Planned Population Federation of Korea (Chairman Park Gyu-hong) announced that the Incheon Fathers Parenting Angel Corps successfully completed its ‘Ganghwa History Tour’, a cultural experience for fathers and children held on Ganghwa Island on July 25.
The event was carried out as part of the city’s initiative to encourage fathers to take an active role in parenting. Its aim is to move beyond the convention of treating child-rearing as a mother’s responsibility and to help fathers take direct part in caring for their children. More than a simple outing, the program was designed as an educational activity that strengthens the emotional bond between father and child while letting them experience Ganghwa’s history and traditional culture through all five senses.
The roughly 100 participants began the day by gathering at the Ganghwa Doryeong hwamunseok (patterned sedge mat) experience center. Under the guidance of expert instructors, they received etiquette lessons in the proper gongsu posture and formal bowing, and went on to a tea ceremony in which fathers and children filled each other’s cups and shared their feelings. A five-senses session in which they made and tasted traditional Goryeo dishes together was also held, letting participants experience tradition with their own hands.
In the afternoon, they moved on to the Ganghwa Dolmen Sites, a UNESCO World Heritage property, and the Ganghwa Natural History Museum. Participants took in the history of prehistoric times and Ganghwa’s natural ecology, broadening their humanistic understanding alongside their children.
Lee Seong-un, a father in his 40s who lives in Namdong-gu and took part in the event, shared his impressions: ‘It was deeply moving to be able to drink tea and make traditional food together with my child and really communicate,’ he said. ‘In the afternoon we could even visit natural history and the sites of Ganghwa’s history, making it a rich and meaningful weekend.’
The Incheon Fathers Parenting Angel Corps is one of Incheon’s leading fathers’ parenting communities (https://cafe.naver.com/infatherangel). Any father living in Incheon with a child in the third grade of elementary school or younger can join and take part in its various programs. In effect, it is a low-threshold gateway for fathers who want to share parenting information and connect with other families of the same age.
The corps plans to hold a traditional mother-of-pearl craft experience on August 8 and the ‘2026 Child Love Festival’ on September 12. It intends to continue offering field-centered programs, expanding Incheon’s value of ‘parenting together’ and a healthy parenting community culture.
