From blood pressure and blood glucose screenings to nutrition and exercise education and linked care for high-risk groups
Guro-gu (Mayor Jang In-hong) is operating the ‘Healthy Senior Center’ program to prevent cardio-cerebrovascular diseases among senior residents in health-vulnerable areas.
Under the Healthy Senior Center program, specialists from the public health center visit senior centers in person to measure blood pressure and blood glucose levels and to provide education on disease, nutrition and exercise necessary for the prevention and management of hypertension and diabetes.

Based on the results of the district-level analysis of the 2025 Community Health Survey for Guro-gu, the district selected Gocheok 2-dong and Gaebong 2-dong as this year’s health-vulnerable neighborhoods. Gocheok 2-dong recorded a low proportion of residents who were aware of their own blood pressure and blood glucose levels within Guro-gu, while Gaebong 2-dong showed a large decline in both proportions.
Last year, the program was carried out at 20 senior centers in Sindorim-dong and Guro 5-dong. This year, the target areas have been changed to Gocheok 2-dong and Gaebong 2-dong, and the program is currently under way at 20 senior centers in the two neighborhoods.
In addition, the district has strengthened seniors’ everyday self-care capabilities by placing an automatic blood pressure monitor at each senior center and providing instruction on the correct way to measure blood pressure. It has also strengthened cooperation with the Guro-gu Branch of the Korean Senior Citizens Association to systematize the selection of participating senior centers and the provision of program information.

The program is conducted in two sessions at each senior center. The first session includes blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, health behavior assessments, education on hypertension and diabetes and on nutrition, and instruction on how to use blood pressure monitors. The second session introduces exercise methods that can be easily practiced in daily life.
Seniors whose screening results fall outside the normal range are registered and managed as a high-risk group. Where necessary, the district provides support so that they can receive continuous health management through referrals to primary care institutions or the home-visit health care program.
Guro-gu Mayor Jang In-hong said, “Since consistent measurement and lifestyle management are crucial for hypertension and diabetes, we are providing support so that senior residents can check and manage their health status at a senior center close to home.” He added, “We will continue to pursue prevention-oriented health management projects that narrow health disparities between neighborhoods and enable the early detection of chronic diseases.”
