The Incheon Culture & Arts Center, operated by the Incheon Metropolitan Government under Mayor Park Chan-dae, held its first ‘Artist Talk’ on July 18 in conjunction with 《The Fourth Wall》, an invitational exhibition by artist Park Shin-yang commemorating the center’s reopening. Park discussed his 14-year artistic career and philosophy and engaged directly with the audience by answering questions from residents.

The event, which began at 2 p.m., was attended by Incheon Mayor Park Chan-dae, who greeted Park Shin-yang and joined the conversation with residents. ‘I hope Incheon residents find comfort through Park Shin-yang’s profound works and that the exhibition brings them closer to art,’ the mayor said.

Park explained why he has refrained from selling his original works, presenting them to the public exclusively through exhibitions. ‘For the past 14 years, I have not sold my original works and have connected with the public solely through exhibitions because I wanted art to be shared as something of value rather than treated as an object of ownership,’ he said.

During the question-and-answer session, residents asked about Park’s works, creative process and artistic outlook. By exchanging questions and answers with the audience, Park brought to life the meaning of the exhibition title, ‘The Fourth Wall,’ which refers to the psychological boundary between the stage and the audience.

After the talk, Mayor Park, the artist and residents toured the exhibition space together. Park personally described the emotions he experienced and the techniques he used while creating each work, helping visitors understand the background of the paintings and his artistic world. By combining commentary and conversation with viewing the works, the event gave residents an opportunity to engage more closely with contemporary art.

Mayor Park also visited 《Art‧T Incheon》, an event organized in conjunction with the invitational exhibition to help revitalize the local art ecosystem. Held at the Michuhol Exhibition Hall from July 17 to 22, 《Art‧T Incheon》 showcases works from the Incheon Art Bank collection alongside the artistic capabilities of local artists. By extending visitors’ interest in the invitational exhibition to local artists and public art assets, the event is expected to help broaden the foundation of the region’s cultural and artistic community.

In response to the positive reception of the first event, the Incheon Culture & Arts Center will hold a second ‘Artist Talk’ on Aug. 1. All seats for the second event sold out after reservations opened.
