Fire Breaks Out Early Morning on the 18th…All-Out Firefighting Effort Under National Mobilization Order
The City of Incheon (인천광역시, Mayor Park Chan-dae (박찬대)) announced that it is operating an emergency response system covering not only firefighting support but also environmental inspections, resident protection, and damage recovery, in connection with the fire that broke out at a Coupang (쿠팡) logistics center in Seongnam-dong (석남동), Seo-gu (서구), at 6:54 a.m. on July 18.
With a national firefighting mobilization order issued over the fire, firefighting authorities and related agencies are continuing a joint all-out response. Along with supporting firefighting efforts, the city is inspecting the status of stored goods and flammable materials at the facility, and is also preparing measures to minimize inconvenience to citizens.
Air and Water Quality Inspections…Temporary Shelters Operating at Sinhyeon Elementary and Others
The city is also concentrating administrative resources on preventing secondary damage from the fire. It is continuously monitoring for air and water pollution, and air quality measurements from monitoring stations and the area near the site have been confirmed not to significantly deviate from average levels. Water used in firefighting is being processed through sewage interceptor pipes, and no abnormalities have been found in sewage treatment plant inflow volumes or water quality inspection results.
To protect residents, temporary shelters have been set up at Sinhyeon Elementary School (신현초등학교) and Sinhyeonbuk Elementary School (신현북초등학교), housing a total of 49 households and 73 people as of 4 p.m. on July 19. The city is also reviewing securing additional shelter facilities in case the fire response is prolonged. In parallel, the city is providing psychological counseling and recovery support for disaster victims, as well as respiratory-related medical assistance.
Regional Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters Begins Operation on the 20th
In preparation for a prolonged fire response, the city held a situation assessment meeting with relevant agencies on July 19 to review response efforts by area—including firefighting support, resident protection, environmental pollution management, and damage recovery—while also discussing future response plans. Starting July 20, the city has organized and begun operating a Regional Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (지역재난안전대책본부) to strengthen cooperation among relevant agencies, with plans to respond in an integrated manner from firefighting support through damage recovery and restoration.
Mayor Park Chan-dae (박찬대) said, “We will maintain an all-out response system until the fire is fully extinguished and take all necessary measures with citizen safety as our top priority.” He added, “Based on the results of the situation assessment meeting, we will operate the Regional Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters starting today to further strengthen cooperation with relevant agencies, and we will concentrate all administrative resources so that citizens can return to their daily lives as soon as possible.”
