Incheon’s Michuhol District (District Chief Kim Jeong-sik) invited 35 families with infants and young children in the district to its office auditorium on June 11 for an event in which parents and children worked together to create their own family stories. The event, titled “Our Family Story, Built with Snacks,” was designed in line with the district’s policy direction of building a city that is good for raising children.

The event was held as part of Michuhol District’s “Building a Graceful (a play on words meaning ‘happy for us and our children’) Childbirth Culture” initiative. It aims to strengthen bonds among family members and to foster a child-rearing-friendly atmosphere in which neighbors and the local community share in the care of children.
At the event venue, parents and children formed teams and used various kinds of snack materials to create works depicting each family’s own story. Participating families worked together, putting their individual stories into the pieces they completed by hand.
At the awards ceremony that followed, the grand prize, the District Chief’s Award, went to the top entry. Beyond simply ranking the entries, the “Sweet Family Award,” “Imagination and Ingenuity Family Award,” and “Golden Hands Family Award” were also given to participating families to encourage the process the families went through together.
Before the event began, the heads of Michuhol District’s nine Aisarang Kkumteo (child care support) centers announced to the participating families the “Stamp Tour” event set to begin on July 24. Under the event, families that visit and get stamps at four Aisarang Kkumteo centers, divided by area, will receive special gifts, with the aim of encouraging participation by families with infants and young children ahead of summer vacation.
A district official said, “Our children are always at the center of Michuhol District as it breathes new vitality into the city and leaps toward the future,” adding, “We will do our best to make Michuhol District a good place to raise children.”
The Michuhol District Comprehensive Child Care Support Center, which organized the event, is a specialized child care service institution that supports the operation of daycare centers in the district and provides customized programs, parent education, and child-rearing consultations for caregivers raising children at home. Amid a broader trend of expanding local government-level child-rearing support policies in an era of low births, this hands-on program involving both parents and children is expected to help spread a child-rearing-friendly culture in the community.
