The Dongchun 2-dong Community Security Council (Co-chairs Lee Young-mi and Sim Hyo-suk) of Yeonsu-gu District is launching an “Elderly Health Kit Project” that visits vulnerable elderly residents in person to check on their health. The measure responds to growing demand for preventive health care as the population ages rapidly.

The project targets vulnerable elderly residents who have relatively limited access to health and welfare services. It was designed to safeguard in advance the health of older adults, who are especially vulnerable to climate change such as heat waves, thereby reducing summer health risks.
The support focuses on outreach care. A nursing official from the neighborhood office visits 20 vulnerable elderly households in person to measure blood pressure and blood sugar, provide education on preventing and managing chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, and offer health counseling tailored to each individual’s condition.
The initiative goes beyond visits, also delivering items to support everyday self-care. Residents receive a “health kit” containing a pill case, vitamins and health aids so that the elderly can manage their own health on a daily basis. Elderly residents who need chronic disease management will be connected to the public health center’s home visit program and local medical institutions, ensuring they receive continuous care rather than a one-time check.
Bundling measurement, education and counseling with the provision of items and referrals to medical institutions in this way is seen as reflecting the reality that elderly residents who have difficulty moving about or accessing information find it hard to visit hospitals on their own.
A council official said, “We hope this project offers even a little help toward the healthy and vibrant daily lives of our elderly residents,” adding, “Going forward, we will build a more comprehensive local welfare network centered on the council so that no neighbor is left behind.”
