The Saemaul Women’s Association of Gwangyo-dong in Michuhol-gu District (Chairwoman Lee Young-woo) donated 50 servings of chicken gomtang on July 3 to help elderly residents living alone in the neighborhood stay healthy through the summer. The act of sharing came as the summer heat began in earnest, with the group looking out for its neighbors.

The donation was arranged in particular to look after the health of elderly people living alone, who are especially vulnerable to heat waves, and to put neighborly love into practice. The chicken gomtang was delivered individually to 50 households of elderly residents living alone, and as they handed over the food, association members also checked on how the seniors were doing.

An official from the Saemaul Women’s Association said, “We prepared this in the hope that it would be at least a small source of strength for seniors who find it hard to look after their meals in the hot weather,” adding, “We will continue to share with neighbors in need going forward.”

A district official said, “We are grateful to the Saemaul Women’s Association for practicing warm-hearted sharing for the local community,” adding, “We will continue our ongoing attention and support so that our seniors can spend a healthy summer.”

Even before this donation, the Gwangyo-dong Saemaul Women’s Association has steadily carried out a variety of sharing activities for vulnerable groups, including donating tteok-manduguk sets for the Lunar New Year holiday, providing grocery packages and carnations on Parents’ Day, and sharing yeolmu kimchi. Such activities, continued each season and holiday, are credited with helping to spread a culture of sharing in the local community.
