With summer’s full-fledged heat waves approaching, the Seonhak-dong Community Social Security Council (Co-chairs Kim Jeong-min and Moon Mi-ja) of Yeonsu-gu has stepped up efforts to look after neighbors vulnerable to the heat. On June 25, the council visited households with poor residential conditions in the area in person to deliver electric fans and check on residents’ well-being.

The support was arranged to protect households easily exposed to the risk of heat-related illness due to cramped living spaces or the absence of cooling equipment. The main beneficiaries were low-income seniors living alone and households in health crisis. The measure took into account the fact that the health of such households is more easily threatened the longer the heat persists.

The council selected 25 households that had been unable to afford cooling appliances because of financial hardship and provided them with electric fans. Rather than simply handing over the items, the council visited each beneficiary household to check on their well-being, adding a caring touch.

Moon Mi-ja, co-chair of the council, said, “What we delivered is not merely a home appliance, but the warm heart of the community wishing our neighbors a healthy summer,” adding, “We hope this electric fan support brings at least a little cool comfort.”

Kim Jeong-min, head of Seonhak-dong, said, “As a prolonged heat wave is expected to continue this summer, we will thoroughly prepare so that all residents can get through the summer safely,” adding, “Through public-private cooperation, we will do our utmost to build a community in which no neighbor is left behind.” The support is a community-based welfare activity in which residents and the administration jointly care for groups vulnerable to heat waves, and is expected to serve as a practical safety net for preventing heat-related illness in summer.
