Yeonsu-gu District (Mayor Lee Jae-ho) in Incheon wrapped up the ’10th Yeonsu-gu Social Welfare Expo,’ held over two days from Oct. 9 to 10 at Yeonsu Hanmaeum Park. About 280 people from 19 local social welfare institutions and organizations took part, informing residents about welfare services and running counseling sessions and hands-on programs. Ten social welfare contributors received commendations from the district mayor at the event.

The expo was organized to raise awareness of the various welfare services available to residents and to introduce the work of local social welfare institutions. This year, it was held in conjunction with the ’14th Yeonsu Neungheodae Cultural Festival,’ which took place during the same period. The aim was to let residents who find it difficult to visit institutions separately for welfare information come across social welfare services naturally while attending the festival.
Fifteen booths focused on exhibitions, promotion and hands-on activities operated at the venue over the two days. Participating institutions used the booths to introduce their respective welfare services and offered welfare counseling to residents.
Outreach efforts to identify people in welfare blind spots also continued. Because residents’ attention and reports are key to finding neighbors who need help but miss out on support because they are unaware of available programs, the festival, which drew large crowds, offered a fitting venue to spread the message.

Hands-on programs were also offered. Visitors made mother-of-pearl key chains and scented crafts and enjoyed traditional games. A donation kiosk was also installed at the expo site, allowing residents to easily make small donations in their daily lives.
During the event, district mayor commendations were presented to 10 social welfare contributors. Through the awards, Yeonsu-gu recognized the hard work of those who serve residents most closely in the field of social welfare.

Now in its 10th year, the expo is significant in that it brought scattered local welfare resources together in one place, allowing residents to compare the services they need and receive counseling in person. For welfare institutions, it also served as an opportunity to meet residents directly, promote their roles and cooperate with one another within the community.
Yeonsu-gu District Mayor Lee Jae-ho said, “We will continue to strengthen cooperation with local welfare institutions so that residents can obtain the welfare information they need close to home, and we will continue to provide resident-centered welfare services.”
As welfare programs become more diverse, expanding the channels through which residents can easily access information is becoming increasingly important. Held alongside the district’s signature festival, this year’s expo represents one way of bringing welfare information closer to residents’ daily lives, and attention is now on how far Yeonsu-gu will expand such points of contact together with local welfare institutions.
