The Incheon Metropolitan Government will keep the main Incheon Metropolitan City Museum and its four branch museums open without closure throughout the four-day Chuseok holiday. The move is designed to let citizens experience Incheon’s history, culture and art up close even during the holiday, and admission to all exhibitions is free.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government announced that it will operate five venues without closure from Sept. 24 to 27 during the Chuseok holiday, including the main Incheon Metropolitan City Museum along with the Songam Art Museum, the Geomdan Prehistoric Museum, the Museum of Korean Emigration History and the Incheon Urban History Museum. Throughout the holiday, each venue will offer exhibitions and hands-on events, with admission entirely free.
The measure allows citizens traveling to and from their hometowns and family visitors to enjoy cultural activities at no extra cost, and it holds significance in offering nearby outing spots to local residents looking for places to go during the holiday.
At the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum, the special exhibition 《The Intellectuals Who Illuminated Joseon-era Incheon》 runs through Sept. 27. Centered on figures who led Incheon’s intellectual life in the late Joseon period — such as Byeongwa Yi Hyeong-sang, Sonam Yun Dong-gyu and Hagok Jeong Je-du — it presents some 100 items, including related classical documents. It is an occasion to trace Incheon’s intellectual tradition through the lives and scholarship of the scholars and thinkers who settled and worked in the city.
At the Songam Art Museum, the special exhibition 《The Artisan’s Breath in the Grain of Wood》 continues through Nov. 15. Highlighting the tradition of woodcraft in the Incheon region and the value of its intangible heritage, the exhibition is organized in three parts: ‘Wooden Furniture and Ox-horn Inlay’, ‘Buddhist Statues and Wood Carving’, and ‘Architecture and Dancheong Painting’. Through some 50 pieces, including Ganghwa bandaji chests, mother-of-pearl lacquerware and ox-horn inlay work, visitors can examine traditional woodcraft and artisans’ skills.
At the Geomdan Prehistoric Museum, the 2026 children’s special hands-on exhibition 《The Secret Hidden in the Rocks: The Story of Incheon’s Dolmens》 welcomes visitors through May 16 next year. An experience-focused exhibition offering an accessible introduction that ranges from the history of megalithic culture to Incheon’s dolmen culture, it features activities popular with families visiting with children, such as placing burial goods and erecting a dolmen firsthand and taking four-cut photos against a dolmen backdrop.
The Museum of Korean Emigration History will hold the special exhibition 《Days Confined in Paradise: Records of Korean POWs at the Hawaii Prison Camp》 from Sept. 22 through Feb. 21 next year. It was arranged to mark the 80th year since some 2,700 Korean prisoners of war in Hawaii — who had left their homeland through forced labor and conscription during World War II — returned to Incheon. Following the perspective of Hwang Hae-su, a native of Chungju in North Chungcheong Province, it revisits the daily lives of the Korean POWs.
The Incheon Urban History Museum runs the children’s hands-on exhibition 《Let’s Go! Tidal Flat City》. In this exhibition, visitors uncover the secrets of a tidal flat city by following a ‘black-faced spoonbill’ friend, and children from age 7 through elementary school, accompanied by a guardian, can view it in the children’s exhibition hall on the third floor. Special events will also be held during the holiday. From Sept. 24 to 27, families visiting with children will receive a ‘traditional-style spinning top making kit’, one per child, limited to the first 200 people each day. The kits can be picked up at the information desk and decorated in the rest area on the first floor.
Kim Tae-ik, director of the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum, said, ‘We have prepared a variety of exhibitions and events so that citizens can encounter Incheon’s history, culture and art up close even during the Chuseok holiday.’ He added, ‘I hope people will visit the museums with family, partners and friends to explore Incheon’s many stories and enjoy a meaningful and pleasant holiday.’
