The Incheon Ganghwa-gun Council of the National Unification Advisory Council announced that it held a ‘Unification Kimchi-Making and Sharing Event with North Korean Defectors’ at the Ganghwa Seomkimchi factory at 10 a.m. on the 18th.

The event was organized to help North Korean defectors settle stably into South Korean society and to create an opportunity for national unity within the local community. As an occasion where defectors carrying on their lives in unfamiliar surroundings joined hands in the same space with local residents and advisory members, it took on added meaning as a gathering for mutual understanding and integration that went beyond simple charity.

A total of 25 people took part in making the young summer radish kimchi that day, including council chair Lee Yoon-seob, advisory members, North Korean defectors and officials from the local police station.

The 200 batches of young summer radish kimchi prepared in this way were delivered to neighbors in need, including North Korean defectors in the county, facilities for people with disabilities, vulnerable residents and seniors living alone. The aim was to ensure that the warmth reached not only defectors facing difficulties in the early stages of settlement but also residents in the community who require care.

Council chair Lee Yoon-seob said, ‘I hope today’s event eases some of the difficulties that North Korean defectors face in their lives in the South and brings a small comfort to their families,’ adding, ‘We will continue to pay close attention so that defectors do not feel isolated and can live healthy, happy lives.’

The council said it plans to continue sharing activities like this one and to support defectors’ settlement in the region as well as harmony among residents.

Inquiries about the event can be directed to the Autonomy Team of the Ganghwa-gun Autonomy and Education Division (032-930-3237).
