Dongincheon-dong Community Welfare Council Delivers Onnuri Gift Certificates to Low-Income Households Ahead of Chuseok

'Bountiful Hangawi, Sharing Hope' project held on Sept. 15... Council members visit homes in person to check on residents' well-being

The Dongincheon-dong Community Welfare Council (Civilian Chairperson Jin Dae-young) of Jemulpo-gu District (Mayor Kim Chan-jin), Incheon, carried out its ‘Bountiful Hangawi, Sharing Hope’ project on Sept. 15, ahead of Chuseok, visiting low-income households in the neighborhood to deliver Onnuri gift certificates.

The project was organized to help neighbors who struggle to prepare a proper ancestral rite table or holiday provisions due to financial hardship enjoy a full Hangawi. Rather than distributing the gift certificates by mail or having recipients pick them up at the center, council members visited each target household in person to hand them over, offering words of comfort on the spot and checking on residents’ living conditions and health.

The choice of Onnuri gift certificates as the support item is also notable. Because the certificates are used at traditional markets and neighborhood shopping districts, recipient households can put them directly toward their holiday shopping, while spending also flows back into the local commercial districts.

One resident who received the certificates said, “Preparing for the holiday was a big burden, and this warm-hearted gesture gives me great strength.”

Civilian Chairperson Jin Dae-young said, “I hope this helps, even in a small way, to ensure that struggling neighbors around us are not left out and can spend a warm holiday,” adding, “We will continue to carry out a variety of welfare activities to share warmth with even more residents.”

A community welfare council is a public-private cooperative body in which civilian members and the administration work together at the dong level to identify and respond to welfare needs. The Dongincheon-dong council plans to continue expanding its welfare activities for vulnerable groups, using this holiday sharing event as a springboard.
