On the evening after the cry of Long Live from the hunt at Xutian (許田) had quietly sunk away, inside the inner chamber of Dong Cheng’s (董承) house, the hem of a robe was passed from one hand to another.

Emperor Xian (獻帝) came alone to Dong Cheng’s house. Only two bodyguards stood a step back before the gate. Dong Cheng knelt upon one knee. With both hands he lifted the inner corner of the hem before the single hand of the Son of Heaven.

Upon the inner corner of the hem, a line of writing had been inscribed in red. Its grain had been written in a drop of blood drawn from the Son of Heaven’s fingertip. The first line of the edict was laid thus: “To Dong Cheng, great minister of Han, this edict (詔) is given. The weight of Cao Cao (曹操) deepens day by day, pressing above the name of the Son of Heaven. I ask that Minister Dong gather the strength by which the name of the Son of Heaven may be returned to its proper seat.”

Upon the back of the writing, two further rows of names were laid. “The hand that will gather this together: Liu Xuande (劉玄德).” “Those who will gather it together: Wang Zifu (王子服), Wu Zilan (吳子蘭), Chong Ji (种輯), Ma Teng (馬騰).” These names were inscribed upon the back of the edict.

Dong Cheng received the hem with both hands. His eyes grew lightly wet. “Your Majesty. Tonight’s edict sits heavy upon this subject’s shoulder. This subject will gather what the edict asks. Only — a long breath of waiting will be needed.” Emperor Xian nodded low. A quiet word slipped from his mouth. “Minister Dong. Tonight’s hem is the last thread of Han. Connect this thread.”

That night the hem was hidden inside Dong Cheng’s bosom. His body walked through the walled city of Xudu. Into the back room of his house, the next morning, Liu Xuande (劉玄德) would quietly step.

The next morning, Liu Bei (劉備) came into the back room of Dong Cheng’s house. Dong Cheng spread the inner corner of the hem before Liu Bei’s hand. Liu Bei knelt upon both knees. His eyes sank deep. “This line, this morning, has been laid upon the center (中心) of my life. This subject will carry the grain of this edict forward.”

Dong Cheng answered low. “Xuande-gong (玄德公). From today, seven names are tied upon a single line. Only — a long breath of waiting will be needed. If we move at one stroke, the grain will leak out. Waiting is the first decision of this line.”

Liu Bei bowed his head deeply. A quiet word slipped from his mouth. “Minister Dong. Waiting is of the same grain as my own. Let us breathe deep within the walled city of Xudu, and carry this waiting together.”

Meanwhile, that night, inside the main camp of Cao Cao (曹操), Xun Yu (荀彧) spoke low. “My Lord. After today’s hunt at Xutian, the lamp of Dong Cheng’s house was lit late tonight. Something is beginning to move inside Xudu.” Cao Cao laughed softly. “Wenruo. A movement, the earlier it stirs, the sooner it reveals itself. Let us wait together. A longer breath is to our advantage.”

Outside Dong Cheng’s gate, long after the Emperor’s carriage had gone, a servant of the house walked into the small courtyard to empty a copper basin. The basin had held a shallow cup of warmed water with which the Son of Heaven’s hand had rinsed a fingertip. The servant poured the water into the earth at the foot of a plum tree, not knowing that the water carried a grain of imperial blood. That year, the plum tree would bloom earlier than usual. No one would record why.

Inside her chamber, Dong Cheng’s wife waited. She asked her husband no question when he came in. A wife of a high minister of Han in this season does not ask questions of a husband returning from the inner chamber of another house where the Son of Heaven has been seen. She only poured one more small bowl of warm rice for him and set it upon a low table. The bowl stayed there for most of the evening, unlifted. Some bowls of rice, once set down on an evening of such a hem, wait patiently, long past the hour of a household’s usual meal.

The seventy-seventh evening of Book 3 deepened quietly upon the hem in Dong Cheng’s house. The three characters Uidaejo (衣帶詔, the Girdle-Robe Edict) were planted as a seed: the breath on which a line written in a drop of blood, six names, a waiting, and a late-lit lamp lay at one seat. The cry of Long Live from Day 76’s Heojeon-ryeop (許田獵) had, this evening, been carried forward upon the corner of a single hem.

✒️ A Word from the Commentator — Dr. Yeon Samheum

There is an evening on which a line has been written in a drop of blood upon the inner corner of a hem. That line, quietly, asks waiting as its first decision. Upon your own evening today, is there perhaps a line laid upon the inner corner of such a hem? Might you look, once more and quietly, into the grain of that waiting?

📅 Tomorrow, Day 78: Green Plums and Warmed Wine

“Cao Cao invited Liu Bei to his private garden. Between a branch of green plums (靑梅) and a jar of warmed wine (煮酒), a discourse on heroes (英雄論) was drawing near.” — Sam H. Yeon, Ph.D.
