Forum on Oct. 21 at the National Assembly Museum Experience Hall in Yeouido…Network of 67 Korean Media Outlets from 32 Countries to Gather

Posted Article No. 59099

Overseas Korean journalists from around the world will gather in Seoul for an international forum to discuss changes in overseas Korean communities and the role of the media.

The Overseas Korean Press Association, an incorporated association, will hold the 8th International Forum at 2 p.m. on October 21 at the National Assembly Museum Experience Hall in Yeouido. Held under the theme “The Role of Overseas Korean Communities and Organizations,” the forum is co-hosted by the association and Kim Seok-ki, chair of the People Power Party’s Committee on Overseas Koreans.

The event looks back on the role of overseas Korean media, which have documented Korean communities around the world and connected local society with the homeland, while also discussing what roles overseas Korean communities and related organizations should play in a rapidly changing international environment.

The Overseas Korean Press Association is currently made up of publishers and representatives of 67 Korean media outlets in 32 countries. Though their countries and regions differ, they have built a media network that records the news of Korean communities and conveys the voices of overseas Koreans across the globe.

As overseas Korean communities face a new environment marked by generational change, shifting demographics, questions of identity and an evolving relationship with the homeland, the role of overseas Korean media increasingly needs to go beyond simply delivering local news. This is because the media’s role is becoming more important as a public forum that connects host-country societies with Korean communities, and Korea with overseas Korean communities worldwide.

At this forum, experts will give presentations and join discussions on how to respond to these changes.

The presenters are Lim Chae-wan, director of the Overseas Koreans Research Institute; Kim Bong-seop, visiting professor in the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Policy at Inha University’s Graduate School of Policy; Kim Jong-cheon, publisher of Sisa Hankyoreh in Canada; and Park Sang-won, publisher of People News in Los Angeles. Two professors and two media publishers will then join as panelists to exchange views on the role of overseas Korean communities and related organizations, and the direction overseas Korean media should take.

The forum draws attention because it allows the issue of overseas Koreans to be discussed not merely as a concern of Korean communities abroad, but from the perspective of a national network connecting the Republic of Korea with Korean communities worldwide.

Overseas Korean media have been the chroniclers who record the history of Korean communities in each country at the closest range, while also serving as a communication channel that delivers the homeland’s policies and news to those communities and conveys their voices to Korean society. Recently, as the media environment changes rapidly around digital media and artificial intelligence, overseas Korean media too have reached a new turning point.

Attention is therefore focused on whether the discussions raised at this forum can go beyond a one-off conversation and become an opportunity for Korean media and overseas Korean organizations around the world to find practical ways to cooperate.

A dinner for attendees will follow the forum. Seating at the dinner is limited to 120 people, and seating charts will be distributed in advance to attendees. Nameplates will also be prepared for current and former organization leaders who have reserved their attendance.

Kim Hoon, president of the Overseas Korean Press Association, hopes the forum will bring together overseas Korean journalists and officials from around the world to think about the future of overseas Korean communities and the role of the media, and to broaden exchange and cooperation.

As the size and reach of Korean communities worldwide expand, the role of the media in recording their lives and voices and connecting them to one another grows more important. Held under the slogan “The Power of Overseas Korean Media Communicating with the World,” the 8th International Forum is expected to show what direction a public forum for new roles of overseas Korean communities, media and related organizations can take.
