On Aug. 28, the Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) Volunteer Center (Director Hong Deuk-pyo) and the Deokjeok Hanmaeum Volunteer Corps (President Kim Young-hee) visited 111 households of climate-disaster-vulnerable residents on Bondo and Jado islands in Deokjeok-myeon Township, delivering ‘Yeolmae V-Boxes’ of heat wave preparedness supplies and checking on their well-being.

The activity was organized as part of the ‘Heat Wave Response Volunteer Activity Support Program,’ hosted and supported by the Korea National Council of Voluntary Agencies, with the area having been selected for the program for a second consecutive year following last year.
The ‘Yeolmae V-Box’ contained items to help prevent heat-related illness and manage health during the summer, including cooling spray, cooling towels and glucose candy.
Jado island in Deokjeok-myeon Township has relatively few households and a comparatively high proportion of elderly residents, making it an area considered to be in particular need of routine care and safety checks during climate disasters such as heat waves. Taking these characteristics into account, volunteers visited each household directly to deliver the supplies and carefully checked on residents’ health and living conditions.
Kim Young-hee, president of the Deokjeok Hanmaeum Volunteer Corps, said, “As the heat wave intensifies, the hardships faced by elderly residents and other vulnerable groups on the islands are growing more severe. We hope the Yeolmae V-Boxes delivered this time will be of some help to elderly residents in getting through the summer safely and in good health.”
Director Hong Deuk-pyo of the center said, “We are grateful to the Deokjeok Hanmaeum Volunteer Corps for joining us in this effort for heat wave-vulnerable residents, and to the Korea National Council of Voluntary Agencies for supplying the goods. As careful care that takes into account the characteristics of island areas is important, we will continue to carry out volunteer activities that look after neighbors vulnerable to the climate crisis.”
Such door-to-door care activities for vulnerable residents in island areas carry added significance in that they serve as a practical safety net given the unique conditions of islands, which tend to have limited accessibility.
