Members of the association visited three public and three private senior centers, delivering six watermelons, six boxes of white peaches and six boxes of Shine Muscat grapes, while also checking on the condition of the centers’ cooling shelters during the ongoing heat wave.
Yoon Hyo-young, who represents the six senior centers in Mansu 3-dong, said, “Last summer too, the association brought us watermelon, peaches, cherries and Shine Muscat grapes, and it was such a welcome, grateful gift for those of us worn out by the heat and with little appetite. We’re moved and thankful that they came in person again this year to check on us and share fruit.”
Moon Mi-kyung, head of the association, said, “As summers grow hotter and more humid because of climate change, our 39 neighborhood leaders came together to support elderly residents, who are physically more vulnerable, with fruit rich in vitamins and minerals so they can get through the summer in good health.”
Cheon Mi-ji, head of the Mansu 3-dong office, said, “Senior centers serve as the closest shelter from extreme heat and cold for residents near their homes, and the clean, welcoming atmosphere there exists thanks to the devotion of every single member. Today’s fruit donation by the neighborhood leaders’ association is a beautiful example of a healthy local community.”
Meanwhile, the Mansu 3-dong Association of Neighborhood Leaders runs small community groups — two environmental cleanup teams and four knitting and traditional game (yutnori) teams — that visit senior centers every month to share their skills and time.
