Defense Sector Accelerates Adoption of ‘Physical AI’ and Robots… Ministry of Trade, Army and Hyundai Motor Group Join Hands

Robots Expanded to Guard, Reconnaissance and Logistics… Easing Soldiers' Exposure to Danger and Repetitive Duties

Posted Article No. 55170

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Minister Kim Jung-kwan), the Republic of Korea Army and Hyundai Motor Group have agreed to apply ‘Physical Artificial Intelligence (AI)’, one of the government’s three mega-projects, to the defense sector and to expand the adoption of military robots. On August 14, the three organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to Expand the Use of Robots, Physical AI and Advanced Technologies at Gyeryongdae in Chungcheongnam-do.

At the signing ceremony, Lee Min-woo, Acting Director-General of the Industrial Growth Office at the Ministry of Trade, Lieutenant General Choi Jang-sik, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, and Lee Hang-soo, Senior Vice President for Policy Support at Hyundai Motor Group, signed on behalf of their respective organizations.

The core of this agreement lies in building a cooperative system that allows advanced physical AI technologies accumulated by the private sector to be swiftly demonstrated within the military and the results to be linked to actual military capabilities. Above all, since the three parties will jointly seek ways to free soldiers from dangerous or simple repetitive support tasks so they can focus more safely on their core missions, the introduction of the technology is directly tied to the safety of the troops.

The agreement includes ▲civil-military cooperation for the research and development of robots and physical AI in the defense sector ▲the establishment of on-site demonstration environments ▲the expansion of demonstrations through support for equipment and personnel ▲the expanded adoption of defense robots in areas such as guard duty, reconnaissance, sustained support and logistics.

The three organizations also divided their roles. The Ministry of Trade will support the technological development and demonstration of defense robots and provide policy support to connect robotics companies with defense demand. Hyundai Motor Group will supply the personnel and technology needed for development and demonstration, and will continuously improve performance and usability by reflecting the feedback of soldiers gathered during the demonstration process. The Army will provide test beds for technology demonstration and support the overall environment so that stable trial operations can take place within the military.

Such cooperation builds on projects already under way. The Ministry of Trade has supported the demonstration of various robots — including patrol robots, cleaning and cooking robots, and logistics robots — through initiatives such as the Intelligent Robot Distribution and Expansion Project, while the Army has provided field units and school institutions as test beds. The three organizations agreed to expand robot demonstration and distribution projects going forward into areas such as patrol and guard duty.

Ahead of the signing ceremony, a discussion session presided over by General Kim Gyu-ha, Chief of Staff of the Army, brought together officials from the three organizations to discuss ways to apply physical AI technology to the defense sector and the challenges of civil-public-military cooperation.

Lee Min-woo, Acting Director-General of the Industrial Growth Office at the Ministry of Trade, said, ‘The government will promote domestic mass production of robots by creating public demand in areas such as defense, public safety and disaster response,’ adding, ‘We will work closely with the military so that the results of demonstrations in the defense sector can lead to actual product purchases and the fielding of military capabilities.’

An official from Hyundai Motor Group said, ‘This MOU will serve as the foundation for civil-public-military cooperation to apply physical AI and advanced technologies to the defense sector,’ adding, ‘Through technology demonstrations and joint research that reflect on-site demand, we will contribute to building a safe and efficient military support system and to enhancing the competitiveness of domestic physical AI.’

Lieutenant General Choi Jang-sik, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, emphasized, ‘For physical AI to translate into genuine combat power, it is important to rapidly demonstrate advanced technologies in the field and to reflect the results in technology development and institutions,’ adding, ‘By pooling the capabilities of the government, industry and the military, we will accelerate the application of technologies needed on future battlefields to defense and speed up the transition into an advanced science and technology military.’
