The ‘Youth-Elder Dialogue Meeting Through AI,’ hosted by the National Unity Committee and sponsored by the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee, was held at Startup Venture Campus Seoul (SVC Seoul) at 2:30 p.m. on the 11th. Held under the theme ‘Yesterday and Today Linked by AI: A Generational Empathy Dialogue Toward Tomorrow,’ the event was designed as a forum for broadening understanding and empathy across generations in the AI era and for responding together to rapid social change.
On the day, some 70 citizens of diverse generations, from people in their 20s to their 80s with an interest in issues of ‘AI’ and ‘generations,’ took part, along with two representatives each of youth and elders. At a time when the pace of technological change is felt differently by each generation, the gathering carried added significance in bringing different age groups together in one place to share their experiences.

In the first part, representatives of the youth and the elders gave presentations on the themes of ‘experience and reality’ and ‘the values and future of the AI era’ as seen through AI. The first presenter, Kim Myung-ja, adviser to the Unity Committee and former chair of the KAIST Board of Trustees, looked back on the changes that carried the Republic of Korea to the status of a world-class science and technology nation and on the older generation’s process of adaptation, conveying ‘wisdom that comes from the past.’ Youth representative Shin Seung-jin, CEO of AIPM Inc. and an AI content creator, then introduced ‘the intense daily lives of young people’ living alongside AI, and set out the attitude young people should adopt in an age where hope and anxiety intersect.
Elder representative Chin Dae-je, co-chair of the National Elders’ Council and former Minister of Information and Communication, drew on the experience he accumulated as a key figure behind the semiconductor success story to assess today’s technological revolution, emphasizing a people-centered AI society as an ‘unchanging value’ for the future. Youth representative Lee Moo-geun, youth adviser at the Ministry of Science and ICT, proposed policies suited to the changes brought by AI and expressed a resolve for elders and youth to build the future of Korea together for a ‘coexisting tomorrow.’

The second part continued with a ‘generational empathy dialogue’ between the two generational representatives and with the audience. Participants shared a time of listening and empathy, seeking to understand one another’s hopes and anxieties amid rapid technological change and discussing the values to be upheld in the AI era, the capabilities each generation needs, and ways to communicate and cooperate across generations.
The event concluded with the announcement of a ‘Joint Declaration of Generational Empathy’ embodying a shared resolve across generations. The declaration contained values gathered through the presentations and dialogue, including ‘acknowledging and respecting differences,’ ‘a human-centered basic AI society,’ and ‘a coexisting future through dialogue and solidarity.’ The signatures of the youth and elder representatives, as well as those of the participants, were added, engraving the intent to move beyond generational boundaries and open the future together as a single community.

In his welcoming address, Chairman Lee Seok-yeon said, ‘This gathering today will be a meaningful starting point where different generations communicate and empathize through the shared interest of AI, break down the walls between generations, and lay the foundation for unity.’ He added, ‘As one of the elders who remember the eras we have passed through and as chair of the Unity Committee who communicates with young people, I look forward to the wisdom of elders meeting the sensibility of youth to open together an AI era of inclusion and unity.’

In a congratulatory address, Kim Eui-young, chair of the AI Democracy subcommittee of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee, said, ‘I hope this occasion becomes a starting point of empathy and trust that links the generations, and a starting point for building together an inclusive society in which no one is left behind, even in the coming AI era.’
The event draws attention as an attempt to turn the generational gap into a resource for understanding and cooperation rather than conflict, at a time when artificial intelligence is spreading throughout daily life and industry as a whole. Its significance lies in embracing technological adaptation—once regarded as an issue for a particular generation alone—as a shared task, and in finding its solution through dialogue.
