Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) has completed work to resolve the recurring problem of seawater intrusion on the coastal road in Bukri, Deokjeok-myeon, which occurred with every high tide and spring tide. The county announced that it recently finished the “Deokjeok Bukri Seawater Intrusion Road Improvement Project,” which it had been carrying out along the Bukri coastal road in Deokjeok-myeon.

The project was launched because seawater repeatedly welled up or seeped onto the coastal road in the Bukri area at every high tide and spring tide, leaving the road submerged. The flooding restricted residents’ passage and repeatedly disrupted daily life.
The damage was not limited to the road. Seawater that overflowed the road flowed into nearby low-lying villages and even entered some residents’ homes, causing property damage. As the situation continued to threaten residents’ livelihoods and property, calls had grown for a fundamental solution.
Ongjin-gun County invested a total of 6 billion won, including Incheon City disaster funds. With the money, it installed a 503-meter seawater intrusion barrier and built two new drainage pump stations. It also carried out section-by-section cutoff works, reinforcement of wave-overtopping walls, installation of drainage outlets and reinforcement of existing pavement, upgrading the road facilities to keep seawater from rising onto the road and to drain water quickly even if flooding occurs.
With the completion of the work, flooding of the road and seawater entering homes can now be prevented. Residents are now able to travel the road safely, and the project is expected to help maintain a stable living environment.
An Ongjin-gun County official said, “Bukri in Deokjeok-myeon has repeatedly suffered road flooding and inconvenience to residents’ lives because of seawater intrusion,” adding, “We expect this project to prevent damage from seawater inflow and create an environment where residents can live more safely and comfortably.”
As coastal roads are thoroughly tied to daily life for island residents, the improvement project, which provides both water-blocking and drainage facilities, is expected to serve as a foundation for reducing disaster damage and protecting residents’ daily safety.
