Jemulpo Culture Foundation to Stage Audience-Participation Musical ‘AnyaFo!’

Aug. 8 performance at Culture Center to give every audience member a djembe for immersive show

Posted Article No. 52170

The Jemulpo Culture Foundation (Acting CEO Chae Jin-gyu) announced that it will present the audience-participation rhythm musical “AnyaFo!, Filled with African Rhythm and Passion” at 2 p.m. on Aug. 8 at the Jemulpo-gu District Culture Center.

The performance was selected for the “Regional Distribution Support Project for Performing Arts,” sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and hosted by the Korea Arts Management Service, and will feature the African percussion group “AnyaFo” on stage.

“AnyaFo” is a non-verbal rhythm musical based on traditional West African percussion rhythms, distinguished by its use of powerful rhythms and dynamic movement alone — without any dialogue — to convey emotion and story.

In this performance, every audience member will be given a djembe, a traditional African percussion instrument. Audience members will play the instrument directly from their seats, breaking down the boundary between stage and audience to complete the show together. The story centers on a timid lion named “AnyaFo,” who gains courage and grows through a series of adventures, and the show also introduces the varied rhythms of traditional African instruments rarely encountered otherwise, such as the beldounoumba and the belantamba, in addition to the djembe.

A foundation official said, “‘AnyaFo’ means ‘Let’s play together!’ in the language of the Malinke people of West Africa,” adding, “The stage will bring the audience and performers together through rhythm, creating a shared experience of Africa’s explosive energy.”

Tickets are priced at 10,000 won for all seats, and a range of discounts have been arranged to improve cultural accessibility for residents, including a 50 percent discount for Jemulpo-gu residents. Reservations can be made by phone through NTicket (1588-2341) or online at www.enticket.com.

For further inquiries, contact the foundation’s Performance Planning Team at 032-886-9045 or visit the foundation’s website at https://www.jcf.or.kr/.

This performance, which communicates through rhythm alone without dialogue, offers a chance to experience African culture without any language barrier, and its format — in which audience members directly play instruments as participants — is considered an unusual attempt for a local culture center performance.
