Incheon Special Judicial Police Launch Targeted Probe of Five Everyday-Life Sectors Ahead of Chuseok

Two-month crackdown in September and October zeroes in on illegal fishing, origin labeling, pharmaceuticals, air pollution and youth-harmful activity

Posted Article No. 58353

Ahead of the Chuseok holiday, the Incheon Metropolitan Special Judicial Police are launching a two-month targeted investigation into five sectors closely tied to residents’ daily lives. The aim is to pre-emptively block everyday illegal activity — involving food, pharmaceuticals, the environment and youth-harmful conduct — that tends to rise during the holiday and the autumn season.

The Incheon Metropolitan Special Judicial Police (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that, to head off illegal activity threatening residents’ safety and health ahead of the Chuseok holiday, it will conduct a targeted investigation from September through October across five sectors closely connected to citizens’ daily lives.

The targets of this probe are five areas where illegal activity is considered likely during the holiday and autumn season: ▲illegal coastal fishing ▲origin-labeling and livestock-product violations during the Chuseok peak season ▲illicit distribution of pharmaceuticals ▲unlawful emission of air pollutants from timber sawmills, and ▲the sale of youth-harmful substances inside sports stadiums.

First, in the coastal waters where fishing intensifies in autumn, investigators will concentrate on violations such as unlicensed and unpermitted fishing, the use of illegal fishing gear, and the distribution and sale of illegally caught fish.

Given that consumption of agricultural and livestock products rises ahead of Chuseok, food-safety enforcement will also be stepped up at multi-use facilities and nearby restaurants and livestock-product outlets. The main targets include false labeling of a product’s origin, markings that could mislead consumers, and violations of livestock-product hygiene and labeling standards. Because consumption is concentrated during this period as households prepare holiday gifts and ancestral-rite tables, the intent is to set the distribution order straight so that consumers can choose food based on accurate information.

At pharmaceutical wholesalers and pharmacies, authorities will inspect illegal distribution practices such as the sale of drugs by unqualified persons and the handling of expired medicines. At sawmills and other timber-processing worksites, they will closely examine compliance with air-quality laws, including whether air-pollutant emission and control facilities are being operated properly.

In and around sports stadiums, investigators will focus on violations of the ban on admitting or employing minors and on the sale of harmful substances or goods targeting youths, moving to shut off environments harmful to young people.

The city says that through this targeted probe it intends to pre-emptively block everyday illegal activity — involving food, pharmaceuticals, the environment and youth-harmful conduct — that can increase during Chuseok and the autumn season, and to establish a safe living environment and sound distribution order in which residents can enjoy the Chuseok holiday with peace of mind. This is a measure that directly safeguards the tables and health of residents during the holiday, as well as the living environment of young people, striking close to the fabric of everyday life.

Sim Yeon-sam, head of the city’s Citizen Safety Headquarters, said, ‘Ahead of Chuseok, we are pursuing a targeted investigation into five sectors to pre-emptively block the various forms of illegal activity that can occur in fields closely tied to citizens’ lives.’ He added, ‘We will investigate rigorously any illegal activity that threatens residents’ safety and health, and we will continue to do our utmost to create a living environment in which citizens can feel secure through season- and sector-specific targeted investigations.’
