Incheon Honors 8 Exemplary Coast Guard Officers for 73rd Coast Guard Day

Recognizing frontline dedication in rescue, maritime security and crackdowns on illegal fishing

Posted Article No. 58197

The Incheon Metropolitan Government has presented commendations to eight exemplary Coast Guard officers who have safeguarded citizens’ lives on the front lines of maritime safety, marking the 73rd Coast Guard Day. The tribute comes as the burden of maritime safety grows ever heavier, given Incheon’s distinctive geography of numerous islands and border waters.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it held a ceremony marking the 73rd Coast Guard Day in the city hall reception room on September 9 and awarded commendations to eight exemplary Coast Guard officers. The event honored their dedication to protecting citizens’ lives and safety and defending maritime sovereignty.

The eight recipients each distinguished themselves in their respective duties. They included officers who carried out swift rescue operations in island regions and at sea, personnel who secured the safety of border waters and major shipping routes and cracked down on illegal fishing by foreign vessels, personnel who maintained maritime traffic order through vessel traffic control, and personnel who contributed to cracking down on maritime crimes such as illegal entry and departure and to eradicating the distribution of illegal fishing gear.

The waters off Incheon face unique conditions. Bordering the northernmost frontier waters of the West Sea and encompassing numerous islands, the area sees high demand for rescue and salvage operations and maritime security, while crackdowns on illegal fishing by foreign vessels must be carried out constantly. This year, changes in West Sea maritime traffic conditions—such as the expansion of the ‘permitted nighttime navigation hours for the five West Sea islands’ for the first time in 39 years—have further highlighted the importance of maritime safety.

Amid such changes, the Coast Guard is tasked with building a ‘safe maritime city of Incheon’ on the front lines of rescue and salvage, maritime security and crackdowns on illegal fishing. This commendation carries the meaning of officially recognizing such everyday dedication and laying the foundation for citizens to use the sea with peace of mind.

Mayor Park Chan-dae said, ‘Incheon’s seas embrace numerous islands and the northernmost frontier waters of the West Sea, and at the same time they are key maritime waters linking the Republic of Korea with the world.’ He added, ‘Going forward, the Incheon Metropolitan Government will continue to cooperate closely with the Coast Guard to build a maritime city of Incheon that together protects the safe daily lives of citizens and the peace of the West Sea.’
