Vice Minister Park In-kyu of Science and ICT Meets Aerospace Youth at Gyeongsang National University

Future talent forum in Jinju discusses research, career paths and regional settlement

Posted Article No. 57889

Park In-kyu, Vice Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation at the Ministry of Science and ICT, visited Gyeongsang National University on September 2 to meet undergraduate and graduate students majoring in aerospace and exchange views on research, career paths and ways to settle in the region. The gathering was arranged in line with the government’s stance of making young people’s voices the starting point of science and technology policy.

The Ministry of Science and ICT (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bae Kyung-hoon) announced that Vice Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Park In-kyu held a ‘youth field communication’ forum with undergraduate and graduate students in aerospace-related majors at Gyeongsang National University on September 2.

The forum was designed to hear the policy needs of the younger generation directly on the ground, and it was held in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, a core hub of Korea’s aerospace industry. The discussion focused on the research conditions, career paths, regional settlement and industrial ecosystem development for future aerospace talent.

In particular, the Ministry’s 2030 Youth Advisory Group also took part, freely exchanging views with the students. The government plans to link the policy needs and field opinions of the younger generation gathered in this process to the discovery of new science and technology policies and to institutional improvements.

At the forum, drawing on their research experience in various fields such as satellite systems, aircraft aerodynamics and satellite navigation, the students shared their views on the direction of investment in the space and aviation sector, the expansion of industry-academia-research joint studies and research infrastructure, research stipends and improvements to the research environment, and employment and start-ups at regional companies. Vice Minister Park listened to these views and held wide-ranging discussions on support measures that young researchers can tangibly feel — such as expanding aerospace research and employment and start-up opportunities within the region and strengthening cooperation among universities, government-funded research institutes and companies — as well as on policy directions for nurturing talent and encouraging regional settlement.

This is understood to reflect the aim of broadening both research conditions and jobs so that young people who majored in aerospace can put down roots at regional industrial sites after completing their studies, rather than leaving for the metropolitan area.

Vice Minister Park In-kyu said, ‘Aerospace is a future growth engine for the Republic of Korea and a leading strategic technology field where young people can take on challenges on the world stage,’ adding, ‘We will actively reflect in policy the voices of young people who research and learn in the field to create an environment where they can immerse themselves in research, and we will strongly strengthen the cultivation and support of talent so that the science and technology professionals who will lead our country’s future can grow with sufficient capabilities.’
