Yeonsu 3-dong to Deliver Summer ‘Yeolmu Kimchi’ to 100 Vulnerable Households

Yeonsu 3-dong Residents' Autonomy Council held a seasonal kimchi-sharing event on the 1st, personally visiting elderly residents with limited mobility to deliver it

With the peak summer heat setting in, Yeonsu 3-dong in Yeonsu-gu District carried out a kimchi-sharing initiative to look after the health of elderly residents during the summer. On the 1st, the Yeonsu 3-dong Residents’ Autonomy Council (Chairperson Min Eun-deok) held a “seasonal kimchi-sharing event” to help supplement nutrition and stabilize the diets of the area’s vulnerable residents.

The event was arranged to help underprivileged elderly residents, who easily lose their appetite in the heat, spend a healthy summer by delivering kimchi made from yeolmu (young summer radish), a seasonal ingredient, while broadening a community culture in which neighbors care for one another.

On the day, council members gathered in the community center’s kitchen and made the kimchi themselves using fresh ingredients such as yeolmu, eolgari (young napa cabbage) and albaechu (small napa cabbage). The finished kimchi was delivered in stages to 100 vulnerable households in the area.

In particular, for households with elderly residents who have difficulty coming in person due to limited mobility, council members visited their homes to hand over the kimchi and check on their well-being. Rather than simply delivering a side dish, they also checked on the safety and health of elderly residents living alone.

“I hope elderly residents, who tire easily in this early heat, will enjoy the seasonal yeolmu kimchi and gain healthy energy,” Chairperson Min Eun-deok said. “We will continue to work to spread a culture of sharing throughout the community and to build a warm village community full of affection among neighbors.”

This sharing initiative using seasonal ingredients is seen as a good example of community care, as it provides practical help for elderly residents’ diets while also being a hands-on form of welfare in which residents lend a hand themselves and visit homes in person.
