Son Hwa-jung, the inaugural chief of Yeongjong-gu District in Incheon who took office on the 1st, headed straight to a site of student safety shortly after her inauguration. On the morning of the 6th, District Chief Son conducted an on-site inspection of traffic facilities along the school route near Unseo Middle School in Yeongjong-gu, Incheon, personally examining the hazards along the path students take to school.

The inspection was carried out to coincide with the Monday arrival period, when vehicle traffic is heavy. Reflecting District Chief Son’s resolve to place residents’ safety above all else, the activity was joined at the site by Unseo Middle School’s parents’ association and teaching staff.
Despite the foul, rainy weather, District Chief Son walked the school route around Unseo Middle School in person under an umbrella, thoroughly inspecting the state of traffic safety and its hazards. In particular, she focused on identifying spots in need of improvement or supplementation by listening to the voices of parents and teaching staff on-site.
At the gathering, parents and teaching staff pointed out the danger posed by the fact that, because several schools are located nearby, cars dropping off students all crowd in at once during the arrival period. They raised, in particular, the view that installing a traffic signal at the crosswalk in front of Unseo Middle School — which currently has no signal light — is an urgent matter. Indeed, with several schools adjacent to this stretch, it was found that on Monday mornings large numbers of private cars carrying children to school and students themselves converge there.

District Chief Son said, “The safety of students is an important task for the local community,” adding, “Yeongjong-gu will continue to do its utmost for matters such as school-route safety so that the young dreamers of the future can grow up in an even safer environment.”
District Chief Son also expressed her intention to take follow-up action on the requests raised at the site that day. She stressed, “Regarding the installation of a traffic signal at the crosswalk in front of Unseo Middle School, which the parents and school officials proposed this time, we will actively consult and review the matter with the relevant agencies.” Attention is now focused on whether residents’ opinions gathered at the school site immediately after her inauguration will lead to actual improvements in traffic safety facilities.
