The Ongnyeon 1(il)-dong Community Social Security Council (Chairperson Baek Yeong-sil) in Yeonsu-gu District (Mayor Lee Jae-ho) distributed grocery vouchers worth 3 million won ($2,170) on July 9 to child households at risk of food insecurity ahead of summer vacation.

The vacation period, when school meals are unavailable, is considered a time when the risk of hunger among children from low-income households rises considerably. To fill this gap, the council carried out the “Grocery Voucher Support Project to Prevent Child Hunger During Summer Vacation.”
The project was funded through donations received after being selected for a grant program run by the Korea Racing Authority’s Incheon Yeonsu Branch.
Rather than distributing cash or fixed items, the council opted for vouchers that can be used at traditional markets and local merchants, giving recipient families greater freedom to choose and purchase the groceries they need. The council said it expects voucher use to help boost patronage of local merchants and benefit the local economy as well.
“We are deeply grateful for the warm support from the Korea Racing Authority’s Incheon Yeonsu Branch, and we will continue working with the community to create a caring environment where children can grow up healthy,” said Baek Yeong-sil, chairperson of the council.
