The Ongjin Welfare Foundation announced on the 14th that it held its second extraordinary board meeting of 2026 on the 13th at a small conference room on the second floor of the Ongjin-gun County office, where it reviewed and passed three agenda items, including a proposal to elect a new chairperson. Following the board’s resolution, Jang Jeong-min was elected as the new chairperson, establishing a new leadership structure to guide the foundation’s operations.

Three agenda items were submitted to the board meeting that day: the election of the chairperson, the second supplementary budget for 2026, and one other item. After discussing major issues related to the foundation’s operations, the board members reviewed and passed each agenda item in turn.

The election of the chairperson was treated as a key agenda item in particular, as it will determine the foundation’s stable operation and the direction of future projects. Newly elected Chairperson Jang Jeong-min is reportedly planning to enhance the stability of the foundation’s operations while expanding welfare programs tailored to local conditions.

Immediately after the board meeting, Chairperson Jang said, “I will dedicate myself with a heavy sense of responsibility for the sustainable development of the foundation and the future of welfare in Ongjin,” expressing gratitude to the board members for placing their trust in him as chairperson.

He went on to outline his plans for the foundation’s future direction, saying, “Over the past four years, I have deeply considered the foundation’s role while witnessing the reality of residents facing restrictions in basic aspects of life, such as medical care and transportation, due to the geographic conditions of being an island region,” adding, “I will work to close the gaps in the welfare safety net thoroughly, through action rather than words.”

The Ongjin Welfare Foundation is an organization that has carried out a range of welfare projects, including programs to strengthen residents’ capabilities, building welfare networks, operating and managing entrusted social welfare facilities, supporting social welfare facilities and their staff, and conducting research and surveys for policy proposals. Taking into account the geographic characteristics of Ongjin-gun County, which comprises many island areas, the foundation has built a customized welfare delivery system and served as a hub for local welfare services.

With this change in chairperson and the passage of the supplementary budget, attention is turning to whether the foundation will be able to make substantive progress in resolving welfare blind spots, such as restricted access to medical care and transportation, for residents of the county’s island areas.
