Ongjin-gun County advances integrated care housing environment improvement service

MOU signed with Brander Co., up to 2 million won per household for 30 households this year

Posted Article No. 53723

Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) is launching a project to repair aging housing conditions so that elderly residents with limited mobility and people with disabilities can continue living in the homes they know. The county has signed an agreement with a private company to expand the scope of its region-specific integrated care service to include housing improvement.

Ongjin-gun County announced on the 30th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Brander Co. and will begin full-scale implementation of the housing environment improvement project. The county has so far partnered with three institutions to provide five types of daily-life care services — household chore support, mobility assistance, empathetic care, meal support, and safe medication guidance — and this agreement adds one more support item to that list.

This year’s project targets support for 30 households. The support limit per household is up to 2 million won, and the project will operate on a customized basis, taking into account each recipient’s physical condition and household circumstances to carry out improvement work tailored to their needs.

Specific support items include removing thresholds and installing anti-slip tiles to prevent falls, finishing indoor floors for safer movement, replacing lighting and installing remote controls to brighten dark homes, and installing fire detectors and automatic gas shut-off devices to prevent fires. Most of the measures are focused on reducing the risk of safety accidents such as falls and fires in elderly households and those with limited mobility.

Ongjin-gun County, which includes many island areas, has long faced difficulty simply finding institutions willing to provide such services. For this reason, the county has continued to recruit and expand service providers across various fields, including home visit hairdressing and beauty services and disease control, thereby broadening its care network — and this housing environment improvement agreement is an extension of that effort.

A county official said, “Securing service providers is difficult given the characteristics of island areas, but with the addition of the housing environment improvement service to existing services such as household chore support, we have laid the groundwork for elderly residents and people with disabilities who need care to live healthily in the places they already call home.” The official added, “We will continue to actively identify and expand region-specific services that residents truly need, and carry out welfare administration centered on the field.”

Observers say the project is meaningful in that it supports conditions allowing elderly residents and people with disabilities in island areas — which have entered a super-aged society — to continue living in familiar homes rather than entering care facilities. Attention is turning to how far Ongjin-gun County’s integrated care service network will expand.
