ESG Green Signal Ep.17 · Standby Power: Just Unplug It

Everyday ESG begins when we reduce the electricity we cannot see

When we come home from work, the first thing we do is turn on the light. The TV remote sits beside the sofa, and the phone charger waits in the outlet. The rice cooker, set-top box, and laptop adapter quietly stay in their places all day.

We may think they are off, but some electronic devices still use a little electricity while on standby. The screen is dark and there is no sound, yet a small current flows as the device waits to be used again. Today’s ESG begins not with grand technology, but with one simple movement of the hand: unplugging what we are not using.

🌱Electricity We Thought Was Off

Standby power means electricity consumed while a device is not actively being used but remains connected to an outlet. TV-related devices waiting for a remote signal, adapters left plugged in after charging, and some appliances that maintain timer functions can fall into this category.

The change may not look dramatic at first. That is why many people pass it by, thinking it cannot matter much. But when the same habit is repeated from home to home, the story changes. Environmental action in ESG does not always require a huge decision. Just as we turn off a dripping tap, noticing electricity that quietly leaks away is meaningful too.

🌱Habit Before Technology

Green technology is not only about making more efficient products. Using the products we already own without waste is also part of living with green technology. Turning off a power strip, unplugging a charger after charging is complete, and checking idle devices before leaving home are actions anyone can take.

What matters is repetition, not perfection. If we decide to unplug everything every time, we may quickly grow tired. It helps to begin with visible places: an outlet near the entrance, the power strip around the TV, or the charger beside the bed. Small rules that fit our daily path tend to last.

🌱A Signal Made Together

Reducing standby power is an ESG practice that works well as a family habit. To children, we can say, ‘Let’s let electricity rest too.’ For adults, it becomes a practical way to save both energy and household costs. Rather than blaming anyone, it can be a warm moment to look together at how electricity flows through the home.

It is important for companies and society to improve energy efficiency, but citizens’ choices also send a signal that supports that change. Using energy when we need it and stopping when we do not is one of the most basic promises against waste. Even a single plug can carry the direction of living better by using less.

💡 Action Guide

★☆☆ Unplug Chargers

Make it a habit to unplug phone chargers and laptop adapters once charging is complete.

★★☆ Use Switched Power Strips

Group TV devices or desk electronics on a switched power strip so they can be turned off at once.

★★★ Check Before Leaving

Before a long outing, check lights, chargers, and unused appliances together with your family.

⚠️ Watch Out For This

Reducing standby power does not mean every device should always be turned off. Appliances that must keep running, such as refrigerators, and devices that require updates or safety functions should be handled according to their manuals. Instead of buying many new products simply because they are labeled “eco-friendly power strips,” it is better to first use what we already have for longer and more efficiently.

Tonight before going to sleep, why not take one slow walk around your home? You may notice a tiny standby light or a charger resting in the outlet. Unplugging a cord is a small act, but it can begin to change how we think about energy. Let’s turn on one small green signal in our homes today.
