The Gwacheon National Science Museum (Director Lee Chung-won) will hold a special after-hours event titled ‘A Night at the Science Museum: Midsummer Edition’ on Friday, August 14, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The permanent exhibition halls and the Quantum Generation special exhibition will be opened free of charge, and a stargazing session ahead of Chilseok will be held alongside hands-on activities and performances, making it a summer nighttime science and culture festival for the whole family.

This marks the second after-hours opening event, following the first held last autumn. A distinctive feature is that opening hours have been extended until 10 p.m. so that visitors can come to the museum in the evening to escape the midday heat, and the program is designed so that indoor exhibition viewing and outdoor stargazing can be enjoyed all in one place. For families visiting during the school break and vacation season, it offers a chance to experience science and culture while avoiding the sweltering heat.
During the event, the permanent exhibition halls and the Quantum Generation special exhibition can be viewed free of charge. Themed guided tours highlighting the distinctive features of each hall will also be offered. In the Science Exploration Hall, exhibitions will be explored in depth under the themes of ‘A Journey Through the Periodic Table’, ‘Force and Motion’, and ‘Waves and Energy’; in the Future Imagination SF Hall, under the themes of ‘Semiconductors’ and ‘The Future of Agriculture’; and in the Korean Science Civilization Hall, under the theme of ‘Food, Clothing and Shelter in Summer During the Joseon Dynasty’.
On the first floor of the Central Hall and in the Creative Studio, a variety of hands-on programs will be offered, including making a Milky Way keyring, a pet rock, and diffraction glasses, as well as making a ‘glow-in-the-dark mugunghwa keyring’ to commemorate National Liberation Day. A magic show and a quiz show will be held, and a Shuki photo zone and an artificial intelligence (AI) midsummer night photo zone will also be set up, allowing families, friends and couples to capture memories of a summer night.
In the astronomy program ‘A Midsummer Night, Starlight and the Milky Way’, prepared ahead of Chilseok, visitors can observe the Milky Way, which is hard to see in the city, along with Altair and Vega, which face each other across the Milky Way. At the planetarium, an immersive guided program will run under the theme of ‘The Story of Altair, Vega and the Milky Way’, while summer constellations and star clusters will be observed at the observatory. Reservations for the planetarium program will be accepted on the Gwacheon National Science Museum website starting Friday, August 7. Near the outdoor lawn plaza, a glow-in-the-dark water gun zone, glow-in-the-dark straw rocket launches, a moon balloon photo zone, and busking performances will be held, connecting indoor and outdoor spaces through light and science experiences.
On the same day, the Natural History Hall will offer a special program for adults, ‘A Night at the Science Museum in Midsummer, On Disappearance: Variations on Science and Literature’, for a fee and by advance reservation. This is a convergence program that examines ‘disappearance’ in natural history, such as dinosaurs and biodiversity, through the lens of both science and the humanities. It opens with a performance blending non-alcoholic cocktails themed on dinosaurs, poetry and music. This is followed by a special lecture in which Director Lee Chung-won appears as ‘Mr. Why’, and a nighttime tour in which participants explore the darkened Natural History Hall with flashlights, examining dinosaur skeletons and natural history specimens from a fresh perspective. The program is offered to 70 adults, with a participation fee of 15,000 won.
To coincide with the after-hours opening, ancillary facilities such as the restaurant, café, convenience store and the rest area inside the train will also extend their operating hours. Vehicles entering after 4 p.m. will receive a 50 percent discount on parking fees.
Director Lee Chung-won said, ‘A Night at the Science Museum is a nighttime science and culture festival designed to let visitors coolly enjoy the sweltering summer together with science,’ adding, ‘I hope people will create special summer night memories at the museum together with family, friends, partners and local residents.’
Detailed information about the event and how to take part in each program can be found on the Gwacheon National Science Museum website (www.sciencecenter.go.kr).
